Noble Prize for Economics 2021

  • A U.S.based Canadian David Card, Israeli-American Joshua Angrist and Dutch-American Guido Imbens today won the Nobel Economics Prize for insights into the labour market and “natural experiments”.
  • The Nobel committee said in a statement that the researchers were honoured for providing “new insights about the labour market” and showing “what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments”.
  • Half of the prize went to Card, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley “for his empirical contributions to labour economics.” Card’s work has focused on labour market effects of minimum wages, immigration, and education.
  • The other half went jointly to Angrist, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Imbens, a professor at Stanford, “for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationship.

International Day of the Girl Child

  • Keeping in tandem with the global needs of cyber safety and acknowledging the importance of cyber hygiene, National e-Governance Division (NeGD) and UN Women India today jointly organised a webinar on “Cyber Safety for Women and Girls” on International Day of the Girl Child coinciding with the National Cyber Security Awareness Month celebrations.
  • The webinar marked the beginning of jointly launched series of initiatives by NeGD & UN Women India under the broader theme of ‘India’s digital dreams and cyber safety’ to encourage safe and equal online spaces for women and girls. The webinar acknowledged the gravity of rising cybercrimes and violence, and the need to encourage safe and equal online spaces for women and girl celebrations.
  • International Day of the Girl Child is an international observance day declared by the United Nations; it is also called the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl. October 11, 2012 was the first Day of the Girl Child.
  • The observation supports more opportunity for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls worldwide based upon their gender.
  • This inequality includes areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women and forced child marriage.
  • The theme this year is “Digital generation. Our generation.”

Loknayak J P Narayan remembered on his Jayanti

  • Jayaprakash Narayan (11 October 1902 – 8 October 1979), popularly referred to as JP or Lok Nayak (Hindi for “People’s leader”), was an Indian independence activist, theorist, socialist and political leader.
  • He is also known as the “Hero of Quit India Movement” and he is remembered for leading the mid-1970s opposition against Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, for whose overthrow he had called for a “total revolution”.
  • His biography, Jayaprakash, was written by his nationalist friend and the writer of Hindi literature, Rambriksh Benipuri.
  • In 1999, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in recognition of his social service. Other awards include the Magsaysay award for Public Service in 1965.

Nanaji Deshmukh remembered on his Jayanti

  • Chandikadas Amritrao Deshmukh better known as Nanaji Deshmukh (11 October 1916 – 27 February 2010) was a social reformer and politician from India. He worked in the fields of education, health, and rural self-reliance. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
  • He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award in 2019 by Government of India. He was a leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and a member of the Rajya Sabha.

28th NHRC Foundation Day

  • NHRC was set up under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993 on 12th October 1993 for the promotion and protection of human rights.
  • The Commission takes cognizance of any form of human rights violations, conducts enquiries and in cases of  violation of human rights, recommends to the public authorities for payment of compensation to the victims, other remedial and legal measures against the erring public servants.

Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence

  • Vice President presents Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence to Director of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Randeep Guleria.
  • Presenting the 22nd Lal Bahadur  Shastri National Award for Excellence to eminent pulmonologist and Director of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Randeep Guleria at Upa-Rashtrapati Nivas, the Vice President said that Shastri Ji took accountability for his actions, which is a very rare quality in our public life. In this context, Shri Naidu stressed the need for upholding transparency and accountability in public life.
  • The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award is an annual prestigious award instituted from Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi. This consists of a cash award of 5,00,000 rupees plus a citation and a plaque.

Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2021

  • The Multidimensional Poverty Index was launched by the UNDP and the OPHI in 2010.
  • MPI is based on the idea that poverty is not unidimensional (not just depends on income and one individual may lack several basic needs like education, health etc.), rather it is multidimensional.
  • Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2021 was released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
  • The Index considers data from 109 countries and 5.9 billion people.
  • 1.3 billion people are multidimensionally poor.
  • About half (644 million) are children under age 18.
  • Nearly 85% live in Sub-Saharan Africa (556 million) or South Asia (532 million).
  • More than 67% live in middle-income countries.
