20th India-France Joint Staff talks held in Paris
- The 20th edition of India-France Joint Staff talks was held in Paris, France on April 12-13, 2022. The meeting was co-chaired by Assistant Chief of Integrated Staff, Int-C (Military Cooperation), HQ, Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) Air Vice Marshal B Manikantan and Head of Bilateral Cooperation South/Staff HQ Brigadier General Eric Peltier.
- The meeting was conducted in a friendly, warm, and cordial atmosphere. The discussions focused on new initiatives under the ambit of existing bilateral defence cooperation mechanism and strengthening ongoing defence engagements.
- The India-France Joint Staff talks is a forum established to enhance defence cooperation between both nations through regular talks at the strategic and operational levels.
- The 20th edition of India-France Joint talks came amidst, both nations have inked a roadmap to enhance their bilateral exchanges on the blue economy and forge a common vision of ocean governance based on the rule of law and cooperate on sustainable and resilient coastal and waterways infrastructure. The agreement was signed during External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar’s three-day visit to France with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian.
3RD MARSHAL OF THE AIR FORCE ARJAN SINGH
MEMORIAL HOCKEY TOURNAMENT 2022
- The 3rd Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey tournament is scheduled to be held from 18 to 23 April 2022 at No.3 Base Repair Depot (BRD), Chandigarh. Air Force Sports Control Board (AFSCB) has been organising the tournament since 2018.
- Air Officer-in-charge Administration will be the chief guest during the opening ceremony on 18 April 2022, while the Chief of the Air Staff will preside over the closing ceremony on 23 April 2022.
- 12 reputed teams from India and abroad including Air Force Hockey teams of Royal Canadian, Malaysian, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka Air Forces have been invited to participate in the 3rd edition of this prestigious tournament.
- Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh’s passion for the game of hockey was unparalleled. He was an inspiration for air warriors not only in wars but also in the field of sports. The centenary year of birth of the Marshal of the Air Force was commemorated by the successful conduct of the 2nd Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament in 2019 with the participation of Air Force Hockey teams from Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. This elevated the tournament to an international event. Integrated Coach Factory (Chennai) was the winner of that edition. The Marshal’s birth anniversary is on 15 April.
US President Approves $800M In New Military Assistance for Ukraine
- In anticipation of a new Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine, President Joe Biden on Wednesday approved an $800 million package of military assistance, including additional helicopters and the first provision of American artillery.
- The Ukrainians also will receive armored personnel carriers, armored Humvees, naval drone vessels used in coastal defense, and gear and equipment used to protect soldiers in chemical, biological, nuclear and radiological attacks.
- The new arms package includes 18 of the U.S. Army’s 155mm howitzers and 40,000 artillery rounds, two air surveillance radars, 300 Switchblade “kamikaze” armed drones, and 500 Javelin missiles designed to knock out tanks and other armor. Also included are 10 counter-artillery radars used to track incoming artillery and other projectiles to determine their point of origin for counter-attacks.
Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh took over as the GOC of the Rising Star Corps
- Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh took over as the General Officer Commanding of the Rising Star Corps from Lt Gen PN Ananthanarayanan. On assuming command, the General Officer exhorted all Ranks to continue working with utmost zeal and enthusiasm.

MEDICAL EVACUATION OF SEYCHELLES COAST GUARD CREW FROM SEA
- An ALH from INS Garuda of the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy undertook a Medical Evacuation of a female crew of Seychelles Coast Guard Ship Zoroaster on 14 Apr 22. The ship was being escorted by INS Sharda and was on a voyage from Kochi to Victoria, Seychelles.
- At about 0930 hrs on 14 Apr, a crew member of SCGS Zoroaster reported severe abdominal pains and was shifted to INS Sharda by boat, for further medical management and evacuation.
- Immediately on receipt of information, an indigenously built Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and a Seaking 42C helicopter were prepared at Kochi for the medical evacuation. At 1233 hrs, an ALH helicopter with a Naval Medical Officer onboard took off from INS Garuda to effect rendezvous with INS Sharda which was approximately 15 km north of Minicoy Island. The aircraft landed back at Garuda, with the patient at 1650 h. The patient was immediately taken to INHS Sanjivani by ambulance. The patient is under observation and her condition is ‘stable’.
Defence Supplies to India Continue from Russia
- Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, defence supplies from Moscow are continuing as the Indian defence forces have received a shipment of overhauled aircraft engines and spares.
- “However, there are concerns on whether these supplies can continue in the same manner as the Indian side cannot make payments to these Russian firms in view of the sanctions related to their banks “.
- The latest supplies from Russia included overhauled fighter aircraft engines and spares for an aircraft fleet and they arrived through the sea route.
- India also received the final parts of the S-400 Triumf air defence system from Russia whose first squadron is operational with its elements deployed to take care of threats from both Pakistan and China.
- India is one of the largest users of Russian weaponry including major platforms like fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters, warships, tanks, infantry combat vehicles, and submarines.
- The Air Force is dependent majorly on the Russian supplies as its mainstay Su30 aircraft fleet is Russian along with its Mi-17 helicopter fleet.
- The Army is also dependent on the Russian-origin T-90 and T-72 tank fleet for the armoured regiments.
