Russian Troops Pull Back From
- Russia said it was returning more troops and weapons to bases, yet another gesture apparently aimed at easing fears it is planning to invade Ukraine, even as the US said the threat of an attack remained.
- Russia has massed about 150,000 troops east, north, and south of Ukraine.
- Russia has denied having any invasion plans and has mocked Western warnings about an imminent invasion as “hysteria” and “madness.”
- The announcement coming from Putin is the strongest signal from Russia that it is trying to de-escalate the situation that has led to the military standoff near the Ukrainian border.
- This is the first sign that Russia might be pulling back from escalation, after weeks of brinkmanship with the West.
Eastern Army Commander Visited Trishakti Corps
- The Eastern Army Commander, Lieutenant General RP Kalita visited forward areas and reviewed operational preparedness along the Sikkim border.
- Kalita visited Sukna, Siliguri. The Army Commander was briefed by Lieutenant General Tarun Kumar Aich, GOC, Trishakti Corps on the prevailing situation and operational preparedness of the formations.
Lt Gen C Bansi Ponnappa DCAS (IS & C)
- Lt Gen C Bansi Ponnappa has taken over as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (IS & C) of the Indian Army, said the Indian Army.
- Indian Army from their official Twitter account posted that Lt Gen has the distinction of commanding the prestigious Vajra Army.
- Vajra Corps:
- The XI Corps of the Indian Army is based in Jalandhar and is a part of Western Command.
- XI Corps was raised to take command of the formations in Punjab in 1950.
BSF Conducts Horticulture Training
- With an aim to empower youth for self-employment, the BSF has conducted a one-week long Horticulture training program in border villages of Punjab, the CAPF under MHA.
- During the training, both theoretical, as well as practical knowledge, was imparted to the villagers about various aspects of horticulture, Greenhouse plantation, Organic fertilizers, floriculture and use of various agricultural tools, etc.
- About BSF
- The BSF was raised in 1965 after the India-Pakistan war.
- It is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of the Union of India under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- Other Central Armed Police Forces are Assam Rifles (AR), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), National Security Guards (NSG), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
- The 2.65-lakh force is deployed along the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders.
- It is deployed on Indo-Pakistan International Border, Indo-Bangladesh International Border, Line of Control (LoC) along with Indian Army, and in Anti-Naxal Operations.
New Areas of Cooperation B/W India & Saudi Arabia
- New areas of cooperation are being mutually identified to include Intelligence Sharing, Counterterrorism, Artificial Intelligence, and Cyber Security.
- This year more exchanges are expected, and training activities are to be conducted. Also, on the agenda during the discussions between the two Chiefs will be the first-ever land forces exercise to be conducted in the second half of 2022.
