Defence Secretary Visited Karwar Naval Base

  • Defence Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar visited Karwar Naval Base on March 17 and 18. He was received by Rear Admiral Atul Anand, Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area.
    • During the visit the Defence Secretary was briefed on the progress of various activities at the Karnataka Naval Area, including the progress on Project Seabird, modernisation of Naval Ship Repair Yard (Karwar) & indigenisation efforts of the Navy to support INS Vikramaditya.
    • The Defence Secretary was also briefed on P8I aircraft operations at the P8I Squadron to be commissioned at INS Hansa later this month. The visit also included a tour of the naval infrastructure and facilities of the area.
    • Project Seabird
    • Project Seabird involves construction of a naval base over an area of 11,169 acres.
    • Phase I comprised construction of a deep-sea harbour, breakwaters dredging, a township, a naval hospital, a dockyard uplift centre and a ship lift. It was completed in 2005.
    • Phase-II of Project Seabird was cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security in 2012. It envisages expanding facilities to house additional warships and set up a new Naval Air Station, among other plans.
    • The grand scale of the Karwar Naval Base
    • INS Kadamba is an Indian Navy base located near Karwar in Karnataka and is currently the third-largest Indian naval base. Clearly one of the largest naval infrastructure projects for India, Project Seabird involves the creation of a naval base at Karwar on the west coast of India.
    • On August 1, 2002, the Government of India had accorded its approval in 1995 for the execution of the first phase of the Project Seabird at a revised completion cost of Rs 1294.41 crore.
    • Construction of the first phase commenced in 1999 and was completed in 2005. This included accommodation facilities, ship lift facility, harbour& anchorage, jetty berthing facilities, among a few others. Development of Phase II commenced in 2011.

Indian Army Trains Banihal Youth to Become Motor Vehicle Mechanics

  • Indian Army took an initiative to train the unemployed youth of Banihal and to direct/Channelize the positive energy of youth towards making them self-employed and economically independent by organizing a skill development workshop for training the youth of Banihal to become motor vehicle mechanic.
  • The one-month course is designed to equip youth with adequate knowledge, technical skills. The Training for youth will be imparted by professionally competent instructors of the India Army from 16 Mar 2022 to 15 Apr 2022.
  • The one-month training program includes the theoretical part of the Engine system, Brake system, Transmission system, Lubrication system, Suspension system, Cooling system, Steering system, Electrical system. Followed by the practical session of each system, OJT, fault finding so as to give full confidence to the youth in their skill and learning.

Brazilian Delegation Visited WNC

  • A three-member Brazilian delegation led by Admiral Flavio Augusto Viana Rocha visited Headquarters WNC, to meet Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh in Mumbai, for discussing the matters that can benefit the navies of both countries.
  • The meeting was held to discuss the issues of mutual interest, including challenges and mitigating strategies in the maritime domain.
  • “The Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Command (FOC-in-C) (West) brought out the Hon’ble PM’s vision of SAGAR- Security and Growth for All in the Region – and Indian Navy’s maritime vision during the discussions and also suggested that Brazilian Navy ships, when deployed in the Importer of Record (IOR), may visit Indian Ports.

Camp Jagrat Was Conducted At INS Chilka

  • As a part of ab-initio training for newly inducted trainees, Camp Jagrat was conducted at INS Chilka from 15-17 March 2022
  • A total of 1500 trainees participated in the camp
  • The Camp was aimed to develop Espirit-de-Corps, Camaraderie, Leadership Traits & Physical Endurance.
  • INS) Chilka-Indian Naval Ship (INS) Chilka, the ab-initio training establishment for Sailors and Naviks of Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard respectively, was commissioned on February 21, 1980. The establishment has expanded more than tenfold since it’s commissioning about four decades back, from an initial capacity of 600, and presently trains nearly 6,500 trainees per.

The 2nd India-Indonesia Security Dialogue

  • The second India-Indonesia Security Dialogue (IISD) was held in Jakarta yesterday.
  • It was co-chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia, Mohammad Mahfud.
  • The IISD is a forum that brings the coordinating minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs of Indonesia and National Security Adviser of India together to discuss and enhance cooperation between the two countries on political and security issues.
  • They discussed current global and security issues, countering terrorism and violent extremism, and enhancing maritime, defence, and cyber security cooperation.
  • India-Indonesia:
  • Both of them have agreed to work together for peace, security, and prosperity in order to achieve their shared vision on maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The Strait of Malacca – waterway connecting the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) and the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean) – runs between the Indonesian island of Sumatra to the West and peninsular (west) Malaysia and extreme southern Thailand to the east.
  • Trade and Commerce: Bilateral trade has increased from USD 4.3 billion in 2005-06 to USD 21 billion in 2018-19.
  • Indonesia has emerged as the second largest trading partner of India in the ASEAN region.
  • India is the second largest buyer of coal and crude palm oil from Indonesia and imports minerals, rubber, pulp and paper, and hydrocarbons reserves.
  • Both countries are members of G20, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), East Asia Summit, and the United Nations.
  • Bilateral Exercises:
  • Exercise Samudra Shakti the bilateral maritime exercise.
  • Garuda Shakti is a joint military exercise between India and Indonesia.

Rajnath Singh Assures Parliament Over Inadvertent Missile Firing Incident

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that a high-level probe has been ordered into the inadvertent firing of a missile that landed in Pakistan on March 9 saying that “if any lapses are found, action will be taken accordingly”.
  • Addressing Rajya Sabha, the minister informed that standard operating procedures (SOPs) for “operations, maintenance, and inspection” of such systems were being reviewed in the wake of the incident.
  • “I’d like to tell this House about an incident that occurred on 9th March 2022. It’s related to an accidental missile release during the inspection. During routine maintenance and inspection of the missile unit, around 7 pm, one missile got accidentally released. While this incident is regretted, we are relieved that nobody was hurt due to the accident,” the Defence Minister told Rajya Sabha.
  • Singh sought to assure Parliament that the “Indian missile system is very reliable and safe” and that the “safety procedures and protocols are of the highest order”.

Pakistan’s ‘Missile’ Fails to Reach Target

  • The residents of Jamshoro in Pakistan’s Sindh province noticed an unidentified flying object falling from the sky with a tail of smoke on Thursday. The object clearly resembled a rocket or a missile.
  • The test was scheduled at 11 am which was postponed by an hour owing to a fault in the TEL (Transporter Erector Launcher). It was finally conducted at noon.

Army Chief Gen Naravane Speaks to General Of Japan

  • Army Chief General MM Naravane held a telephonic interaction with General Yoshida Yoshihide, Chief of Staff, Ground Self-Defence Force, Japan, and discussed aspects of bilateral defence cooperation.
  • Earlier, on Tuesday, India and Japan held a 6th Act East Forum meeting.
  • Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla chaired the 6th Act East Forum with the Japanese Ambassador to India Satoshi Suzuki and exchanged views on possible new areas of cooperation between both countries.
  • The MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that both sides reviewed the progress of ongoing projects in connectivity, hydropower, forest management, water supply and sewerage, skills, Japanese language.

Army Chief Visited Eastern Command HQ

  • Army Chief General MM Naravane visited Eastern Command headquarter in Kolkata to review the operational preparedness of both the Indian Army and Air Force.
  • The chief was briefed on the operational preparedness by both the Air Force and Army commanders including Air Marshal DK Patnaik and Lieutenant General RP Kalita.

Eastern Command (India):

  • The Eastern Command is headquartered in Fort William in the city of Kolkata in the state of West Bengal.
  • The Eastern Command was formed on 01 November 1920.
  • The Command is commanded by a three-star rank officer with the title General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C).

UK To Deploy Advanced Air Defence System, 100 Troops in Poland

  • UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said that the UK will send its most advanced air defence system and 100 troops to Poland to bolsters NATO’s eastern flank amid Russia’s ongoing military operation in Ukraine.
  • The Sky Sabre air defence system reportedly launches missiles at speeds of 2,300 miles per hour that can target objects as small as a tennis ball, and can be used against planes, drones, and rockets.
  • About Sky Sabre- The Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM) is a family of surface-to-air missiles developed by MBDA UK for the United Kingdom. CAMM shares some common features and components with the ASRAAM air-to-air missile, but with updated electronics and an active radar homing seeker.

Parliamentary Panel Points To ‘Low’ Selection of Male NCC Cadets In Armed Forces

  • The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has said that there has been a low selection rate of male NCC ‘C’ certificate cadets in the Indian armed forces.
  • The report of the panel on demands for grants of the Defence Ministry for 2022-23 was presented in parliament.
  • It has been suggested that the Ministry should revamp training methods and also devise new methods to ensure that NCC cadets are trained in a professional way for their selection through Staff Selection Board.
  • During the meetings of the panel, data provided by the Ministry of Defence revealed that the selection of male NCC Cadets from 2017 to 2021 was 314 as against the available vacancies of 500.
  • The committee was further informed that the selection rate of NCC ‘C’ certificate holders in the Army is also quite low as more than 40 % of vacancies remained vacant.
  • During the same period, the performance of the ‘C’ certificate holder in the Naval wing was also not up to the mark as out of 12 vacancies only two cadets were selected as officers in the Navy.
