The first woman pilot in the Indian Air Force to fly the Rafale fighter jet is part of the IAF contingent participating in the multinational exercise ‘Orion’ in France. Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh is in France for the exercise, where India is sending Rafale jets for the first time outside of the nation, according to IAF officers.
The IAF had dispatched a woman fighter pilot for the first time to an overseas exercise in January this year when Squadron Leader Avni Chaturvedi traveled to Japan for the exercise ‘Veer Guardian’. Flight Lieutenant Singh was commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF)’s second class of female fighter pilots in 2017.

Flight Lieutenant Singh flew the MiG-21 Bison before the Rafale. She is a Varanasi inhabitant. She is a member of the IAF’s Golden Arrows squadron, which is headquartered in Ambala, Haryana. Flight Lieutenant Singh became the first female fighter pilot to fly the Rafale in 2020 after being selected as a Rafale pilot following a rigorous selection process.
About Multinational Air Exercise Orion
Orion is said to be the greatest international exercise ever conducted by French military forces, comprising their Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as allies the US and the UK. The rehearsal involving NATO countries’ land forces is claimed to have involved around 7,000 NATO troops. The Indian Air Force will also take part in Exercise Copeindia, which will take place in Kalaikunda, West Bengal, beginning on April 10. According to sources, the exercise schedule and availability of American F-15 fighter planes may vary.
The Rafale fighter jet is the most recent addition to the Indian Air Force and is largely regarded as the most powerful in the entire Asian region. The 36 Rafales have been fully inducted and have substantially contributed to the country’s operational readiness along its borders with Pakistan and China.
