SIGNING OF MoU B/W INDIAN NAVY AND M/S L&T   

  • A MoU was signed, on 20 Apr 22, between Indian Navy and M/s Larsen and Toubro (L&T) by Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Materiel on behalf of Indian Navy and Shri Jayant Damodar Patil, Whole–Time Director (Defence & Smart Technologies) and Member of the Board, L&T.
  • The MoU aims to engage M/s L&T as a Knowledge Partner for nurturing technologies in various domains, for induction into the Indian Navy. Further, the MoU aims to bring together IN and L&T to collaborate on innovative and pioneering projects related to contemporary and emerging technologies of mutual interest.
  • The MoU encompasses all the aspects related to Electrical, Weapon, Engineering, Machinery and Control and Hull of a Naval Warship.
  • Larsen & Toubro
  • Larsen & Toubro Ltd is an Indian multinational conglomerate, with business interests in engineering, construction, manufacturing, technology and financial services, HQ in Mumbai.
  • The company is counted among the world’s top five construction companies.

MOD Signs MoU with Ministry of AYUSH

  • Two MoUs have been signed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) with the Ministry of AYUSH one for starting Ayurveda Centres at 37 Cantonment Hospitals and another for starting Ayurveda Centres at 12 Military Hospitals of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
  • These MoUs were signed during the three-day mega event, Global Ayush Investment & Innovation Summit, organised at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat from April 20-22, 2022.

LAUNCH OF 6th SCORPENE SUBMARINE ‘VAGSHEER’  

  • The 6th and last submarine of the Indian Navy’s Kalvari class submarines of Project 75 have been launched today at the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of MDL. Dr Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary was the Chief Guest at the ceremony and the submarine named ‘Vagsheer’ was launched by Mrs Veena Ajay Kumar, in keeping with Naval traditions of launch/ naming by a lady.
    • The first of the Project – 75 submarines were commissioned into the Navy in December 2017 and presently four submarines of this Project are in commission in the Indian Navy. The 5TH submarine is progressing with the Sea Trials and is likely to be delivered this year.

CNS VISIT TO MALDIVES

  • In his first overseas visit after assuming the office of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Admiral R Hari Kumar visited the Maldives from 18 to 20 Apr 22.
  • During the visit he called on HE Mr. Ibrahim Mohamad Solih, Hon’ble President of the Republic of Maldives, HE Mr. Abdulla Shahid, Hon’ble Minister of Foreign Affairs, HE Ms. Maryia Ahmed Didi, Hon’ble Defence Minister, and Major General Abdulla Shamaal, the Chief of Defence Force (CDF).
  • Adm R Hari Kumar hosted a reception onboard Indian Naval Ship Sutlej on 18 Apr 22, in honour of the Defence Minister of Maldives and the leadership of Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF). INS Sutlej is currently deployed to the Maldives for undertaking a joint hydrographic survey under the MoU on hydrographic cooperation. The CNS unveiled the first Navigation Chart jointly produced by India and Maldives and handed over hydrography equipment to consolidate the organic capabilities of the MNDF.
  • Guided by the ‘Five S’ Vision of Sammaan (Respect), Samvaad – (Dialogue), Sahyog – (cooperation), Shanti – (Peace) and Samriddhi – (Prosperity), articulated by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, the visit of the CNS further consolidated the strong and long-standing bilateral relations between two close maritime neighbours and also identified new avenues of expanding the scope of bilateral cooperation in defence and maritime domain.

  • The National College for Policing and Law Enforcement was inaugurated by India’s External Affairs Minister during his two-day visit to Maldives in March 2022.

  • Located in the southern and northern parts of this island chain lies the two important Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOCs).

MoD utilises 65.50 per cent of the Capital Acquisition Budget on domestic procurement in FY 2021-22

  • Ministry of Defence (MoD) had earmarked 64 per cent of the Capital Acquisition Budget for the domestic industry in Financial Year (FY) 2021-22. At the end of FY 2021-22, MoD has been able to overachieve this target and has utilised 65.50 per cent of the Capital Acquisition Budget on indigenous procurements through Indian Industry to achieve Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. Further, as per the preliminary expenditure report of March 2022, the MoD has been able to utilise 99.50 per cent of the Defence Services Budget in FY 2021-22.

Civil Services Day 2022

  • Every year, on the 21st of April, National Civil Services Day is celebrated in India as a token of appreciation for all officers, engaged in various public departments in the country, who work tirelessly to run India’s administrative machinery.
  • This day also acts as a reminder for civil servants, working in various departments, of the cause to serve the citizens of the country above all else.
  • The reason behind choosing this very date was to commemorate the day when the first Home Minister of Independent India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, addressed the probationers of Administrative Services Officers in 1947 at Metcalf House, Delhi.
