CDS Bipin Rawat Conferred Padma Vibhushan Posthumously
- The First Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat was posthumously awarded Padma Vibhushan for his exceptional & distinguished service.
- Daughters of General Bipin Rawat received the award on his behalf from the President of India at the ceremonial function in New Delhi.
- General Bipin Rawat, the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) died in an IAF helicopter crash in December last year.
Padma Shri To Shri Sheesh Ram for Art
- President Kovind presents Padma Shri to Shri Sheesh Ram for Art. A well-known artist, his paintings on national integration, women empowerment, Indian warfare, history of Indian art have been exhibited in India and abroad.
MILITARY EXERCISE LAMITIYE – 2022
- The 9th Joint Military Exercise LAMITIYE-2022 between the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) is being conducted at Seychelles Defence Academy (SDA), Seychelles from 22 March to 31 March 22.
- An Infantry Platoon strength each from both the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF) along with Company Headquarters will be participating in this exercise which is aimed at sharing experiences gained during various operations against hostile forces in Semi-Urban environment and enhance capability to undertake joint operations.
- The Indian Army contingent comprising troops from the 2/3 GORKHA RIFLES group (PIRKANTHI Battalion) arrived at Seychelles on 21 March 2022. Exercise LAMITIYE-2022 is a biennial training event which is being conducted in Seychelles since 2001.
RECRUITMENT OF FEMALE CANDIDATES
- Indian Army:
- (i) Officers: There are no recruitment camps and rallies conducted for officers’ recruitment. In 2021, a total of 60 women candidates were commissioned as officers in the Indian Army (IA).
- (ii) Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs)/ Other Rank (OR): A total of 300 vacancies for recruitment of Women Military Police have been released till date. Status of recruitment is as given below:
- Indian Navy:
- The Indian Navy has discontinued conduct of recruitment camps (rallies) since 2018 and has fully migrated to online application-based recruitment examinations. No recruitment camps and rallies are therefore being organized in any State/UT of the country.
- IAF:
- Induction of officers’ cadre (men & women) in the IAF is not undertaken through recruitment camps and rallies. Induction process in officers’ cadre comprises of entrance exam and testing at Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs).
- In the year 2021, a total of 115 women candidates were inducted for training into the officers’ cadre. Presently, recruitment in airmen cadre is carried out only for male candidates.
- The number of seats for women candidates to be recruited as officers in NDA and OTA is as under:

Lt Gen Pratik Sharma Took Over as The GOC Of Kharga Corps
- Lt Gen Pratik Sharma took over as the General Officer Commanding of Kharga Corps from Lt Gen N S Raja Subramani. On assuming command, the General Officer paid tributes to the Bravehearts at Vijay Smarak & exhorted All Ranks to continue working with zeal & fervour.
Let Gen DS Rana Took Over as The GOC Of Gajraj Corps
- Lieutenant General DS Rana took over as the General Officer Commanding of Gajraj Corps from Lieutenant General Ravin Khosla. On assuming command, the General Officer exhorted All Ranks to continue working with zeal & enthusiasm.
13-year-old Navy School Student swims from Sri Lanka to India
- In a major feat of long-distance swimming, 13-year-old Jiya Rai undertook the effort of swimming from Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka to Arichalmunai’s Dhanushkodi in India.
- These two locations mark just one of the many routes between the Sri Lankan and Indian mainland respectively and Jiya Rai achieved this feat in 13 hours.
- Jiya is India Open Water Para Swimmer and a world record holder in the open water swimming.
- Jiya had been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2022 under the open water swimming category, the highest award for citizens below 18 years.
BORDER DISPUTE BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN
- The situation along Line of Control remains stable post the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGsMO) Understanding of February 2021. Both the Armies have exercised restraint in the interest of maintaining peace along the LC.
- However, the situation is being closely monitored and Indian Army remains prepared to thwart any threat from inimical elements as also to respond in case of any escalation along the Line of Control.
- Security situation along Western Borders (IB Sector) remains largely stable. However, there are indications of an emerging narco-terror nexus sponsored by inimical elements across the border aimed at causing instability, especially along border areas.
- Our forces along Western borders are adequately poised to respond to any challenge posed by adversary across entire conflict spectrum.
- Line of Control
- The Line of Control (LoC) emerged from the 1948 ceasefire line negotiated by the United Nations (UN) after the Kashmir War.
- It was designated as the LoC in 1972, following the Shimla Agreement b/w the two countries.
- LoC is demarcated upto the Siachen Glacier (Point NJ9842)- the world’s highest battlefield.
- LoC is delineated on a map signed by the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both armies and has the international sanctity of a legal agreement.
India-Australia Summit on Security
- In a reference to the border standoff with China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday emphasised that peace and tranquillity at the border area was an essential prerequisite for normalisation of relations with the neighbouring country.
- Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said, “Ukraine and China were discussed. On the Ukraine issue, it was clear that the two sides had referred to the Quad summit in which the leaders had a fairly clear perspective that the situation in Ukraine should not impact on the Indo-Pacific.”
- India- Australia Relations: Various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives like AUSINDEX, Mutual Logistic Support Arrangement (MLSA) and Defence Science & Technology Implementing Arrangement (DSTIA) were reviewed.
