President’s Colour to INS Valsura
- On 25Mar 2022, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the Hon’ble President of India & Supreme Commander of Indian Armed Forces, will award the President’s Colour to INS Valsura at Jamnagar.
- INS Valsura is a “stone frigate” (shore establishment) of the Indian Navy in Jamnagar, Gujarat. A premier technological training institution, it is the Electrical school of the Indian Navy.
- The President’s Colour Award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon any military unit of India. It is also known as ′Nishaan′ which is an emblem that will be worn by all unit officers on the left-hand sleeve of their uniform.
- It was the Indian Navy that was the first branch of the Armed Forces to receive the President’s Colour in May 1951.
EU, India, 8 Other Countries Call for International Cooperation On Personal Data Protection
- The European Union and nine countries, including India, on Monday, called for fostering international cooperation to promote high data protection and privacy standards based on certain core elements increasingly shared across the Indo-Pacific region, Europe, and beyond.
- Data Protection in India Data protection is the process of safeguarding important information from corruption, compromise or loss.
- Data is the large collection of information that is stored in a computer or on a network.
- The importance of data protection increases as the amount of data created and stored continues to grow at unprecedented rates.
- Need: According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI)’s Digital in India report 2019, there are about 504 million active web users and India’s online market is second only to China.
- Large collection of information about individuals and their online habits has become an important source of profits. It is also a potential avenue for the invasion of privacy because it can reveal extremely personal aspects
- Information Technology Act, 2000: It provides for safeguarding against certain breaches in relation to data from computer systems. It contains provisions to prevent the unauthorized use of computers, computer systems, and data stored therein.
Parliament Panel Says IAF Strength Down
- Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence has expressed concern over the Air Force’s squadron strength, currently below the sanctioned limit of 42, and called for time-bound procurement to replenish it.
- The induction of the Light Combat Aircraft Mk-1 and Mk1A and the proposed induction of Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft “will be helpful”, the panel said but emphasised on “a time-bound procurement of these aircraft, so as to replenish the Air Force squadron”.
- Apart from LCA and Rafale fighter jets, Defence Secretary Kumar said, “We have ordered S-400; we have ordered UAVs. So, the composite effort to ramp up the air defence and the air capability in the last four to five years has been significant.”
Sri Lankan Army Officers Honour Their Indian Army ‘Guru’
- In a special gesture, a retired Indian Army Brigadier was invited as a special guest by the Sri Lankan Army officers who received training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun 30 years ago.
- Brigadier Mandeep Singh Sandhu (Retd) was from the elite 10 Para Commando unit and had participated in the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka from 1987-1989 after which he got transferred to the IMA Dehradun as an instructor and was assigned to train the first batch of Sri Lankan Army officers.
EX-DUSTLIK III 2022
- An Indian Army contingent has departed for a joint training exercise with Uzbekistan Army, informed the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday. The third edition of the exercise, titled EX-DUSTLIK would be conducted at Yangiarik, Uzbekistan from March 22 to March 31.
- The Indian contingent which comprises a platoon strength of Grenadiers Regiment departed for the exercise would be joining the Uzbekistan Army contingent represented by troops of the North-Western Military District.
- “The joint exercise would focus on Counter-Terrorism operations in semi-urban terrain under a United Nations Mandate. The training schedule will focus primarily on sharing tactical level drills and learning best practices from each other. The exercise aims at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between two armies.
- The last edition of DUSTLIK was conducted in Ranikhet (Uttarakhand) in March 2021.
Ex Suraksha Kavach 2
- Ex Suraksha Kavach 2, a joint security exercise by various agencies of the Indian Army & Maharashtra Police was conducted by Agnibaaz Division at Pune. Ex focused on refining counter-terrorism drills.
- In a major capability boost for the Indian Army, the Defence Ministry on Tuesday cleared a Rs 4,000 crore proposal for a dedicated surveillance satellite to keep an eye on the activities along the borders with China and Pakistan.
- “The Defence Acquisition Council meeting on Tuesday cleared the proposal for a made in India dedicated satellite for the Indian Army. The project for the satellite GSAT 7B will be carried out in partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and would help the Indian Army enhance its surveillance in border areas”.
UAE Army Delegation On 6-day Visit To India
- A delegation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Army is on a six-day visit to India, aiming to enhance defence cooperation engagements between armies of the two countries.
- According to a statement issued by the Defence Ministry, the delegation arrived on March 21 and is visiting Indian Army training establishments and will attend the Inaugural Army to Army Staff Talks (AAST).
- “The UAE Army delegation is currently visiting Army establishments in Maharashtra to include School of Artillery, Armoured Corps Centre & School, Mechanised Infantry Centre & School, National Defence Academy, Command Hospital of Southern Command, Army Institute of Physical Training, Military Intelligence School & Depot and Bombay Engineers Group & Centre,” the ministry statement read.
General Rawat India-Australia Young Defence Officers’ Exchange Programme
- Ministry of External Affairs announced the list of documents signed during the India-Australia virtual summit, which include the establishment of General Rawat India-Australia Young Defence Officers’ Exchange Programme and Similar Tax benefits for investments by Australia’s sovereign and pension funds in India as in Australia.
- Matching funds as Australia of the amount of AUD 10 million or approx. rupees 56 crores for Pacific Island Countries under Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) was announced. Matching funds as Australia of the amount of AUD 10 million or approx. rupees 56 crores for Pacific Island Countries under International Solar Alliance also announced.
NDA GEARS UP FOR INDUCTING FIRST BATCH OF GIRL CADETS
- National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, the prestigious Tri-Services military training institute of the country, is geared up for training the first batch of girl cadets with effect from June 2022. Akin to their male counterparts, girls of the age group 16½ to 19 years will undergo three years of military training after successfully clearing the UPSC NDA written exam, Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews and medicals. A total of 19 vacancies namely, 10 for Army, 06 for Air Force and 03 for the Navy have been allotted by the respective Service HQs for the first batch of girls at NDA.
- The training objective at NDA shall continue to remain as centre of excellence for producing military leaders equipped with professional, moral and physical attributes required for leading the troops to victory in the future battlefields. With minimum changes to the existing curriculum the training in Academics, Drill, Outdoor Training, etc. will be conducted in absolutely gender-neutral manner. However, owing to physiological differences between male and female cadets, the aspect of Physical Training may entail certain changes in the training of girl cadets.
- Dedicated support staff will be provided for facilitating the training of girl cadets. Majority of training activities shall be conducted jointly keeping their employability in mind, wherein the women officers are required to command the troops of men. Similar training methodology already exists in other Pre-Commissioning Training Academics like OTA Chennai, INA Ezhimala and AFA Hyderabad.
