DEFENCE UPDATES 29 JUNE 2021

DRDO successfully flight tests New Generation Agni P Ballistic Missile

  • As per the policy, any orbital or sub-orbital rocket launch from Indian or overseas territory can be carried out only after authorization from Indian National Space Promotion & Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).
  • Mission can be launched from own or leased launch site or from mobile platforms like land, sea or air.
  • Currently, Agnikul Cosmos is developing small rocket to launch small satellites into orbit. Skyroot Aerospace is the other small rocket maker.

Raksha Mantri in Ladakh; Dedicates to the nation 63 bridges built by BRO in six States & two UTs

  • Launched these at an event held at Kyungam, 88 kms from Leh in the Union Territory of Ladakh on June 28, 2021.
  • From Kyungam, RM inaugurated a 50-metre-long bridge constructed on the Leh-Loma Road in Ladakh.
  • RM virtually inaugurated 62 more bridges – 11 in Ladakh, four in Jammu & Kashmir, three in Himachal Pradesh, six in Uttarakhand, eight in Sikkim, one each in Nagaland and Manipur and 29 in Arunachal Pradesh. The combined cost of the projects is Rs 240 crores, and they will provide a tremendous boost to connectivity in the border areas.
  • With the inauguration of 63 bridges in one go, BRO has surpassed its own record of 44 bridges launched in 2020. These 63 bridges, combined with 12 roads dedicated to the nation by Shri Rajnath Singh on June 17, 2021, form a bouquet of 75 infrastructure projects completed by BRO, when the nation is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its Independence.

Indian Navy’s Naval Partnership Exercise with South Korea in East China Sea

  • Indian Navy’s indigenous ASW Corvette INS Kiltan deployed in the Far East undertook this Exercise in the East China Sea with Republic of Korea Navy Ship ROKS Gyeongnam, a Daegu-class frigate on 28 Jun 21.
  • Goal: Enhancing inter-operability and facilitating exchange of best practices with partner navies in maritime domain.

Story About Our Underwater Machines…

  • The Indian P 75I project — to build six conventional submarines in an Indian yard with foreign collaboration — has been given a go ahead by the defence ministry this month and will involve a competition between Russia, France, Germany, Spain and South Korea to provide technology.

  • The most important aspect of the technology is Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) that enables submarines to remain underwater for over two weeks, steps ahead of the current fleet that needs to surface after a few hours to take in oxygen for burning fuel.
  • Russia has said that it has AIP critical technology that can meet India’s order but has suggested that the technology transfer be done under an intergovernmental agreement, given the complexity of the project.

But what is this Air Independent Propulsion?

  • Submarines are essentially of two types: conventional and nuclear.
  • The conventional submarines use diesel-electric engines, which require them to surface almost daily to get atmospheric oxygen for fuel combustion.
  • If fitted with an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, the submarine will need to take in oxygen only once a week.
  • The indigenously-developed AIP, which is one of the key missions of the Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL), is considered one of the ambitious projects of the DRDO for the Navy.
  • The project aims at fitting the technology on India’s Scorpene class submarine INS Kalvari around 2023.

Advantages of Air Independent Propulsion:

  • Makes the diesel generator less dependent on surface air.
  • Increases their lethality and stealth multifold.
  • Submarine has a low acoustic emissions of sound.
  • There is yet no clarity whether the Indian requirements will specify that the technology has to be demonstrated on an operational submarine, but the formal tender is expected next month.
