PMGKAY Extended Till September 2022

  • The Union Cabinet today extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana by another six months till September 2022. Announcing this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that more than 80 crore people of the country will be able to take advantage of the scheme like before. He said, the strength of India lies in the power of every citizen of the country. The Prime Minister said, to further strengthen this power, the government has extended the scheme.
  • The Phase-5 of PM-GKAY scheme was to end this month. It may be recalled that the PM-GKAY has been under implementation since April 2020, as the largest food security program in the world.
  • The Government has spent approximately 2.60 Lakh Crore rupees so far and another 80 thousand Crore rupees will be spent over the next 6 months till September 2022 taking the total expenditure under PM-GKAY to nearly 3.40 Lakh Crore rupees.
  • This will cover nearly 80 crore beneficiaries across India and like before would be fully funded by the Government of India.

Supercomputer Param Shakti

  • PARAM Shakti”, a Petascale Supercomputer “at IIT Kharagpur, has been dedicated to the nation under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) – a joint initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)  and Department of Science and Technology (DST).
  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IIT Kharagpur and the Centre for Development in Advanced Computing (CDAC) in March 2019 to establish this state-of-the-art Supercomputing Facility with 17680 CPU cores along with 44 GPUs. This facility has pioneered in using RDHX based efficient cooling systems to obtain a high-power usage effectiveness. This system has been tested extensively by both IIT Kharagpur and CDAC for commercial, open-source, and in-house software for diversified applications.

Railway Lifts Obaidullah Khan Hockey Cup

  • Indian Railways’ Men Hockey Team Won The Prestigious Obaidullah Khan Heritage Hockey Cup Held At Bhopal (MP) From 21.03.2022 To 27.03.2022. In The Final Match Held  On Sunday, Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) Team Beat Army XI.
  • The Prestigious Hockey Tournament Was Played At Major Dhyanchand Stadium, Bhopal Where Chief Minister Of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Inaugurated The Tournament On 21st March.
  • Started In Year 1931 As Obaidullah Gold Cup, The Prestigious Tournament Carried On For Decades And Has Produced Many  International Players During Its Journey. It Was Last Played In Year 2016 And Was Organized After A Gap Of Six Years This Year. Last Time, In  The Year 2016, The Tournament Was Won By  BPCL And Railways Team Was Runners Up.
  • A Dozen Teams Participated In The Esteemed  Tournament  Concluded On March 27 Where Railway’s  Arjun Was Adjudged Man Of The Tournament.

States Too Can Define Minority Status

  • Censured By The Supreme Court For Not Taking A Stand On The Politically Sensitive Question Of Identifying Minorities At The State Level And Granting Of Minority Status To Hindus In States Where Their Numbers Have Fallen Below That Of Other Communities, The Centre Has Finally Broken Its Silence And Put The Onus On States, Saying They Too Have The Power To Declare Communities As ‘Minority’.
  • In An Affidavit Filed In The Top Court, The Union Ministry Of Minority Affairs Said, “State Governments Can Also Declare A Religious Or Linguistic Community As A ‘Minority Community Within The State”.
  • The Affidavit Was Filed In Response To A 2020 Petition By Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, Who Said That As Per The 2011 Census, Hindus Were A Minority In Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, J&k, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, And Punjab And That They Should Be Given Minority Status In These States In Accordance With The Principle Laid Down By The Supreme Court In Its 2002 TMA Pai Ruling.
  • In The TMA Pai Case, The Sc Had Said That For The Purposes Of Article 30 That Deals With The Rights Of Minorities To Establish And Administer Educational Institutions, Religious And Linguistic Minorities Have To Be Considered State-wise.

President Ram Nath Kovind Presents Padma Awards

  • President Ram Nath Kovind Presented Padma Awards At The Civil Investiture Ceremony-ii Held At Rashtrapati Bhavan This Evening. Mr. Kovind Presented Padma Vibhushan To Veteran Hindustani Classical Vocalist Dr. Prabha Atre. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh Was Given The second-highest Civilian Award Posthumously. 
  • Nine Padma Bhushan Awards Were Presented. Krishna Murthy Ella And Suchitra Ella Of Bharat Biotech Which Produced Covid-19 Vaccine Covaxin, Odia Littérateur Dr. Pratibha Ray, Veteran Jurisprudence Scholar Acharya Vashistha Tripathi, And Actor Victor Banerjee Got The Award. India-born Mexican Scientist Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram Was Given The Award Posthumously. 
  • Tokyo Paralympics Gold Medalist Pramod Bhagat And Sumit Antil, Tokyo Olympics Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra, Singer Sonu Nigam, Tribal Ao Author T Senka Aao, Kathak Dance Duo Kamalini And Nalini Asthana, Wood Carving Artist From Ladakh Tsering Namgyal, Veteran Kalaripayattu Exponent Shankarnarayana Menon Chundayil And Veteran Lavani Singer Sulochana Chavan Were Among The 55 Persons Who Got Padma Shri. Polish Scholar Dr. Maria K Byrski And Ireland’s Professor Rutger Kortenhorst Also Received Padma Shri For Popularising Sanskrit.

FTA Between INDIA-UAE Is Expected From 1st May

  • The free trade agreement between India and the United Arab Emirates is expected to come into force from 1st May this year. India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, CEPA was signed on 18 February 2022 in New Delhi during the India-UAE Virtual Summit held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The agreement aimed at boosting the merchandise trade between the two countries to 100 billion US dollars over the next five years. The India-UAE CEPA is the first deep and full free trade agreement to be signed by India with any country in the past decade.
  • Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has said that historic India – UAE CEPA, is a joint roadmap to transform the lives of our people and strengthen the partnership on the global stage. In a tweet, Mr. Goyal said, India-UAE embark on a brighter future together.

Oscar Awards 2022

  • At the 94th Academy Awards Ceremony, Will Smith win the first Oscar of his career for his performance in King Richard. Jessica Chastain won Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. The best Supporting actress award was won by Ariana DeBose for West Side Story.
  • CODA was the big winner of the night winning the Best Picture award. The film was nominated in three categories and won all three. The other two are Best adapted screenplay and Best supporting actor for Troy Kotsur.
  • Dune won six awards at the Oscars out of its ten nominations – Best original score, Best cinematography, Best visual effects, Best film editing, Best Sound, and Best production design.
  • Jane Campion won the  Best Director  Award for the film The Power of the Dog.
  • Ms. Campion is the first woman to ever compete in the category twice. In 1994, she was nominated for The Piano.
  • The Oscar award for best supporting actor went to Troy Kotsur for his role in “CODA.” He is the first deaf male actor ever to be nominated and to win an Oscar.
  • The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), honored the best films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021. The ceremony, hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes, takes place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, this morning, where Awards are being given in ten categories.
