Conclude Jet Engine Talks with France in A Month: Defence Ministry
- The Defence Ministry has asked officials to conclude negotiations with France to co-develop a new fighter jet engine at the earliest, identifying it as a key component towards India’s ambitions to achieve self-dependency in military equipment.
- India requires a new 110 kilonewton powered engine for the future class of advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA) and has been in discussions with France to leverage some of the offsets accruing from the Rafale fighter jet deal towards the project.
- Engines are part of the most critical systems on fighter jets with few nations able to master the technology. Rough estimates show that for a fleet of 200 Light Combat Aircraft in service, the cost of engines alone would be in excess of 25 billion Euros over the lifecycle of the planes.
Germany To Invite PM Modi To G-7 Meet in Push To Isolate Russia
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz plans to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the special guest to a Group of Seven leaders’ summit next month as part of an effort to forge a broader international alliance against Russia.
- Germany, which currently holds the rotating G-7 presidency, will also welcome the leaders of Indonesia, South Africa and Senegal to the gathering in the Bavarian Alps June 26 to June 28, said people with knowledge of the matter.
- India was among the more than 50 countries that abstained from a United Nations vote to suspend Russia from the UN Human Rights Council in April. It hasn’t imposed sanctions on Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Instead, India is boosting energy imports from Russia and is also a significant buyer of Russian weapons, which it says it needs to deter its neighbors China and Pakistan.
Exercise Sagar Kavach
- Coastal Security Exercise, Sagar Kavach (A&N)- 01/22, was conducted by ICG (A&N), ANC from 27-28 Apr 22 towards ensure Coastal Security.
- The Ex witnessed participation from 17 stakeholders. Various SOPs were revalidated during the Ex.
- ICG was established in August 1978 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 as an independent Armed force of India.
- As the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, it has played a significant role in securing the Indian coasts and enforcing regulations in the maritime zones of India.
- It is an Armed Force, Search and Rescue and Maritime Law Enforcement agency under the Ministry of Defence.
- It is headquartered in New Delhi.
- The concept of forming ICG came into being after the 1971 war.
- The blueprint for a multidimensional Coast Guard was conceived by the visionary Rustamji Committee.
- For effective command and control, the Maritime Zones of India are divided into five Coast Guard Regions, namely, North-West, West, East, North-East and Andaman & Nicobar, with the respective Regional Headquarters located at Gandhinagar, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Port Blair. .
Successful trials of ATAGS howitzers carried out in Pokhran
- Trials of made in India Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) were successfully conducted at Pokhran Field Firing Range (PFFR) between April 26 and May 2, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- ATAGS is a fully indigenous towed artillery gun system project undertaken in mission mode by DRDO as a part of the artillery modernization programme of the Indian Army.
- The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) has been developed by the DRDO and produced by two firms Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
- The gun is expected to be the mainstay of the Indian Army tower howitzer fleet and may also be used to replace the Bofors howitzers.
116 trainees complete Merged Artificer Apprentice Course at INS Shivaji
- As many as 116 trainees of the Merged Artificer Apprentice Course (MAAC) successfully completed their professional ab-initio training extending 96 weeks at INS Shivaji, the premier Marine Engineering Training Establishment of the Indian Navy located at Lonavala in Pune.
- The 33rd Merged Artificer Apprentice Course included 112 trainees of the Indian Navy, three trainees of the Indian Coast Guard and one international trainee from Tanzania.
- The Course Completion Ceremony was held on 30 April 2022 and was reviewed by Cmde Arvind Rawal, Commanding Officer, INS Shivaji. Prashant C, U/N (ME) stood ‘First in the Overall Order of Merit’ and Sachin, ERA/APP was adjudged as the ‘Best Sportsman’ of the Course and was awarded Commodore’s Rolling Trophy.
India’s Internal Security Remained Under Control In 2020: MHA
- Even as the country faced a crisis on almost all fronts, especially in the health and economic sectors, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the country’s internal security remained “under control” in the particular year.
- Noting that the Government of India accorded due priority to enhancing internal security, the report stated the principal “focus on the internal security front remained on countering terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, improving the security scenario in the NE states, combating Left Wing Extremism and maintaining peace in the hinterland of the country”.
- As per the report, the names of terrorist organizations or individuals, involved in terrorism are listed in the First Schedule and Fourth Schedule of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 respectively, and that the Central Government has declared “42 organizations and 31 individuals as terrorist organizations and individual terrorists respectively till December 2020”.
