5th BIMSTEC Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will Attend The 5th BIMSTEC Summit Today. The Summit Meeting, Which Is Being Held In Virtual Mode, Will Be Hosted By Sri Lanka, The Current BIMSTEC Chair. To Prepare For The Summit, Meetings Of BIMSTEC Senior Officials Took Place And The Meetings Of The BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers Were Held Yesterday.
  • The Covid Pandemic-related Challenges, And The Uncertainties Within The International System That All BIMSTEC Members Are Facing, Imparts Greater Urgency To The Goal Of Taking BIMSTEC Technical And Economic Cooperation To The Next Level. This Is Expected To Be The Main Subject Of Deliberations By Leaders At The Summit.
  • The Leaders Are Also Expected To Discuss The Establishment Of Basic Institutional Structures And Mechanisms For The Group.
  • BIMSTEC: The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional multilateral organization.
  • Its members lie in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal constituting a contiguous regional unity.
  • Out of the 7 members, Five are from South Asia – Bangladesh Bhutan India Nepal Sri Lanka Two are from Southeast Asia – Myanmar Thailand BIMSTEC not only connects South and Southeast Asia, but also the ecologies of the Great Himalayas and the Bay of Bengal.
  • It mainly aims to create an enabling environment for rapid economic development; accelerate social progress; and promote collaboration on matters of common interest in the region.
  • Origin: This sub-regional organization came into being in 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration. Initially, it was formed with four Member States with the acronym ‘BIST-EC’ (Bangladesh, India, Sri-Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation). It became renamed ‘BIMST-EC’ in 1997, following the inclusion of Myanmar. With the admission of Nepal and Bhutan in 2004, the name of the grouping was changed to ‘Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

3rd National Water Awards

  • President Ram Nath Kovind Launched The Jal Shakti Abhiyan – Catch The Rain 2022, Heralding A New Era Of Ensuring Water Security In The Country. The Campaign Will Continue Till 30th November This Year. He Said This Year’s Focus Of The Campaign Is Spring Shed Development, Catchment Area Augmentation, And Gender Mainstreaming. Mr. Kovind Said The Government Is Taking Effective All-out Efforts To Ensure Water Security And Conservation Of Water Bodies Across The Country.
  • Stating That The Water Crisis Has Impacted The International Levels, President Appealed To The People To Ensure The Success Of The Campaign. He Said The Conservation Of Water Should Be Made A Mass Campaign

Left Wing Extremism Reduced By 77%

  • The Centre Said That There Has Been An Unprecedented Improvement In The Country As Left-wing Extremism (LWE) Has Declined Over The Past Few Years. In A Written Reply In The Lok Sabha, The Minister Of State For Home Nityanand Rai Said That There Has Been An Overall 77 Percent Reduction In Violent Incidents From An All-time High Of 2258 In 2009 To 509 In 2021.
  • He Said 85 Percent Lwe Related Deaths Are Also Reduced Which Was An All-time High Of 1005 In 2010 And Came Down To 147 In 2021 In The Country. Mr. Rai Said This Has Been Possible Due To The Resolute Implementation Of The National Policy And Action Plan To Combat LWE, Which Was Launched By The Centre In 2015.
  • The Minister Said The Number Of Security Forces Personnel Killed In Lwe Related Violence Has Reduced By 84 Percent From An All-time High Of 317 In 2009 To 50 In 2021.
  • The Number Of Civilian Deaths Has Also Gone Down By 86 Percent From An All-time High Of 720 In 2010 To 97 In 2021.
  • Mr. Rai Said The Geographical Spread Of LWE Has Also Reduced From An All-time High Of 464 Police Stations In 96 Districts In 2010 To 191 Police Stations In 46 Districts In 2021.

Restoration And Preservation Of Oldest National Flag

  • The Centre has said the oldest National Flag is in a delicate condition which was hoisted on 15th August 1947 at St. George Fort in Chennai. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Culture and Tourism Minister G. Kishan Reddy said, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has set up an expert committee for the restoration and preservation of the oldest National Flag. He said the estimated cost of the project is 13 lakh rupees.
  • Mr. Reddy said the scientific studies have been carried out by the ASI with the Textile Committee of Chennai and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam using non-destructive techniques before the start of the conservation of the National Flag.
  • The Minister said complete photo and video documentation has also been done. Based on scientific studies and the suggestions of the expert committee, the conservation and preservation work is being carried out to complete the project at the earliest.

Russia And Ukraine Begin Talks In Turkey

  • Russian and Ukrainian delegations began another round of talks in Turkey’s Istanbul today to end the tension between the nations.
  • In a speech at the start of the meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said progress in the talks could pave the way for a meeting between the leaders of the two countries.
  • He said there will be no losers in peace and prolonging the conflict is not in anyone’s interest. He said the whole world is awaiting the good news that will come from the talks.
  • The delegations are scheduled to hold two days of talks in a government building adjacent to the 19th-century Ottoman palace, Dolmabahce, on the shores of the Bosporus.
  • Ahead of the talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said his country is prepared to declare its neutrality, as Moscow has demanded, and is open to compromise on the fate of the Donbas, the contested region in the country’s east.
  • Meanwhile, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he has launched an effort to achieve a humanitarian cease-fire that would allow aid to be brought in and people to move around safely. Talking to reporters outside the Security Council in New York yesterday UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he asked UN Humanitarian Affairs chief, Martin Griffiths, to explore the possibility of a cease-fire with Russia and Ukraine.
