Lovlina Borgohain Wins Bronze at Tokyo Olympics

  • Lovlina Borgohain settles for bronze, loses against reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli in Tokyo 2020.
  • The 23-year-old hails from Assam participated in the Women’s welterweight event, becoming only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics.
  • In 2020, she had received Arjuna Award.

Fast Track Special Courts Extended for Further 2 Years

  • Cabinet approves continuation of Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts for further 2 years.
  • Continuation of 1023 Fast Track Special Court (FTSCs) including 389 exclusive POCSO Courts
  • Outlay of Rs. 1572.86 crore, Rs.971.70 crore as Central Share and Rs.601.16 crore as State share. Central Share is to be funded from Nirbhaya Fund.
  • Fast Track Special Courts are dedicated courts for swift justice for victims of sexual offences and strengthen the deterrence framework for sexual offenders

Usage of NavIC System has Increased

  • Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh says, usage of Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (NavIC system) has increased in sectors like transportation and personal mobility.
  • The Ministry has mandated fitting NavIC-based Automotive Industry Standard 140 (AIS 140) compliant vehicle trackers in all the public and commercial vehicles.
  • There is also an increase in the number of NavIC enabled smart cell phone models in the Indian market.
  • NavIC performance is on par with other non-Indian Global Positioning System and is a strong alternative to the non-Indian Global Positioning Systems within the coverage area.

“Vande Bharath Mission” has Served 128 lakh Passengers

  • The Vande Bharat Mission started in early May 2020 to evacuate Indians stranded abroad due to coronavirus-induced travel restrictions.
  • 28 lakh passengers travelled under the mission till 24 July 2021.
  • Till 24.07.2021, more than 88,000 inbound flights have been operated and over 71 lakh passengers have returned to India from more than 100 countries. In the same period, more than 87,600 outbound flights have been operated and over 57 lakh passengers have travelled from India to foreign countries.
  • The flights under the Vande Bharat Mission are operated under strict compliance of the health-related protocols laid down by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and the procedures laid down by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. In addition, applicable guidelines/ instructions of the foreign country to/from which the flights are being operated, are also adhered to.

CBIC Launches Compliance Information Portal (CIP)

  • The Central Board for Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) launched the Indian Customs Compliance Information Portal (CIP) for providing free access to information on all Customs procedures and regulatory compliance for nearly 12,000 Customs Tariff Items.
  • CIP is yet another facilitation tool developed by CBIC to empower our business as well as any interested person with up-to-date information on the legal and procedural requirements of Customs and Partner Government Agencies (FSSAI, AQIS, PQIS, Drug Controller etc.) for carrying out imports and exports.

Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2021 Passed

  • The legislation seeks to amend the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India Act, 2008.
  • The Act designates an airport as a major airport if it has annual passenger traffic of at least 35 lakhs.
  • The Bill amends the definition of major airport and adds that the Central Government may group airports and notify the group as a major airport.

IMF Governors Approve Record $650 Billion to Fight Covid-19

  • The Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the allocation of $650 billion in reserve funds through IMF Special Drawing Rights to crumble down the impact of covid-19 from the world by boosting the vaccination drive across the globe, especially among the poorer countries.
  • Around 70% of the allocation will be given to the G-20 (largest economies), with 3% for low-income nations. Overall, 58% of the new SDRs will be distributed to advanced economies, with 42% for developing and emerging economies. So out of $650 billion, about $21 billion will be credited to low-income countries and $212 billion to other emerging markets and developing countries, without counting China, according to U.S. Treasury Department calculations.

Status of the E-Prisons Project

  • The e-Prisons, which aims at computerization of the functioning of prisons in the country, has been operationalized in all States and Union Territories.
  • e-Prisons data has been integrated with Police and Court system under the Inter-operable Criminal Justice System.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided financial assistance of Rs.99.49 crores to the States and Union Territories (UTs) for this project and all funds have been released to them.
