Indian Men’s Hockey Team Wins a Bronze Medal in Tokyo Olympics

  • In an historical win, Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020 today.
  • It is the first Olympic medal win of Indian men’s hockey team in the last 41 years which they secured with a 5-4 win over Germany in an interesting bronze medal match.
  • This is India’s first Olympic medal in hockey since they won the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya Bags a Silver Medal

  • Wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya won silver medal in Tokyo Olympics today after losing to Russian two-time World Champion Zaur Uguev 4-7 in the men’s freestyle 57kg final.
  • The 23-year-old became the second male wrestler to win a silver for India in wrestling at the Olympics, after wrestler Sushil Kumar.
  • This is India’s fifth medal in Tokyo after medals from Mirabai Chanu, P.V. Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain and men’s hockey team.

TRIFED Celebrates its 34th Foundation Day

  • Tribal Co-operative Marketing Federation of India (TRIFED) was founded on August 6, 1987.
  • It was founded to drive tribal development through marketing support for tribal products, both, handicrafts, and Non-Timber Forest Produce (NTFP).
  • TRIFED will celebrate this day in a special manner, with due publicity, to raise awareness among one and all regarding the issues related to trade in tribal areas, and the need to ensure a fair deal for the tribes in the commerce of their products.
  • The proposed event shall also recognize the achievements and contributions that the tribes and people working for them have made in this regard.

Swinhoe’s Softshell Turtle: World’s Most Endangered Turtle

  • The animal is also known as the Hoan Kiem turtle or Yangtze giant softshell turtle.
  • In Vietnam, these animals have great cultural significance as people in Hanoi revere this creature as a living god.
  • In recent years, a lot of efforts have been put by the conservationists to save the world’s most endangered turtle, Swinhoe’s softshell turtle from the brink of extinction.
  • Native to China and Vietnam. The natural habitat for these turtles are wetlands and large lakes.
  • They have been driven to the brink by hunting for its meat and eggs, as well as by destruction of its habitat.

Loss of Income to GOI in Toll Collection

  • The Government said that the loss of income in toll collection since the Covid 19 pandemic had resulted in an estimated loss of Rs.3512 crore.
  • In a written reply to the Lok Sabha Union Minister for Road transport Nitin Gadkari said that the Government has declared all lanes of fee plazas on National Highways as FASTag lane of the fee plaza from the midnight of 15/16th February this year.
  • The approximate user fee collections in 2019-20 and 2020-21 are Rs. 27,682 crore and Rs. 28,548 crores, respectively.

  • PMGKAY to continue till Diwali (November), informs PM Modi during interaction with 15 crore beneficiaries.
  • Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is a food security welfare scheme announced in March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
  • The program is operated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
  • The scheme aims to feed the poorest citizens of India by providing grain through the Public Distribution System, to all the priority households (ration card holders and those identified by the Antyodaya Anna Yojana scheme).
  • PMGKAY provides 5 kg of rice or wheat (according to regional dietary preferences) per person and 1 kg of dal to each family holding a ration card.
  • The scale of this welfare scheme makes it the largest food security program in the world.

Thailand Bans Sunscreens From all its Marine National Parks

  • Thailand has banned sunscreens containing chemicals that damage coral from all its marine national parks.
  • Concerns are growing that lotions tourists use for sun protection are harming slow-growing corals.
  • The Thai Department of Conservation said four ingredients commonly found in sun creams were shown to destroy coral larvae, obstruct coral reproduction and cause reef bleaching.
  • Anyone flouting the ban can be fined up to 100,000 baht (£2,100).
  • However, officials have not said how they plan to enforce the new rule. The banned lotions are those containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor or butylparaben.
  • Similar bans have been introduced by the Pacific Island of Palau and the US state of Hawaii.
  • This is the latest attempt by the Thai government to protect its coral from the tourism industry.
