Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award

  • The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor of India, has been renamed Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
  • The renaming recognizes the ultimate hockey hero and legend of the sport, Dhyan Chand.
  • The Prime Minister said the move was based on the numerous requests he received from across the nation.
  • Dhyan Chand, whose birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day, won three Olympic golds for the country.
  • Major Sports Awards in India:
  • Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (1956), is given to the university for “top performance in the inter-university tournaments” over the period of last one year
  • Arjuna Award (1961) is given to sportspersons for “consistent outstanding performance” over the period of last four years.
  • Dronacharya Award (1985), it is given to coaches for “producing medal winners at prestigious international events”.
  • Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (1991–1992), is given to sportspersons for “most outstanding performance by a sportsperson” over the period of last four years.
  • Dhyan Chand Award (2002), It is given to individuals for “lifetime contribution to sports development”.
  • Rastriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar (2009), It is given to organizations (both private and public) and individuals for “playing a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development” over the period of last three years.

Plastic-Mixed Handmade Paper: KVIC

  • Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has secured Patent registration for its innovative Plastic-mixed Handmade Paper developed to reduce plastic menace from nature.
  • The plastic-mixed handmade paper (which is recyclable and eco-friendly) was developed under Project REPLAN (Reducing Plastic from Nature). The project was launched in September 2018 as part of KVIC’s commitment to Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.
  • It aims to make carry bags by mixing processed and treated plastic waste with cotton fiber rags in the ratio 20:80.

Second Anniversary of Article 370 Revocation: J&K

  • On 5 August 2019, the government of India revoked the special constitutional status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution, and abrogated Article 35A.
  • Article 35A had allowed J&K to define who its ‘permanent residents’ are and what rights and privileges are attached to such residency.
  • The former state was bifurcated into the Union Territories of Ladakh (without a legislature) and Jammu-Kashmir (with a legislature).
  •  Still the militancy continues to remain a major challenge in J&K.

Funds Lapsed in MPLADS

  • The Standing Committee on Finance has criticized the decision of the Ministry of Finance (Department of Expenditure) for giving barely a week’s time to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) for funding ongoing MPLADS projects, owing to which 50% funds lapsed.
  •  Itwould have hit several local area development projects under implementation across the country.
  • MPLAD is a Central Sector Scheme which was announced in December 1993.
  • The objective of the scheme is to enable the Members of Parliament (MP) to suggest and execute developmental works of capital nature based on locally felt needs with emphasis on creation of durable assets.
  • Initially, it came under the control of the Ministry of Rural Development. Later, in October 1994, it was transferred to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

7th National Handloom Day to be Celebrated

  • Textile Ministry will celebrate the 7th National Handloom Day. The handloom weaving community will be honored for their contribution in the socio-economic development of this country.
  • It is a sector that directly addresses women’s empowerment with over 70 per cent of all weavers and allied workers being female.
  • August 7 (in 2015) was chosen as the Swadeshi Movement (completed 110 years) which was launched on this day in 1905 in Calcutta Town Hall to protest the partition of Bengal by the British Government.

Task Force to Examine Correlation of Marriageable Age Submitted the Report

  • In a written reply to Lok Sabha by Women and Child development Minister Smriti Irani said that task force set up to examine the correlation of marriageable age and related issues, has submitted its report to the Centre.
  • She said the task force has also examined other issues like motherhood, health, medical wellbeing, nutritional status of mother during pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech last year spoke about a panel formed to decide on the “right age of marriage” for women.
