Brahmos Aerospace Will Set Up Its Missile Production Unit At Lucknow

  • The defence firm BrahMos Aerospace had signed an agreement with UPEIDA to set up the BrahMos manufacturing centre, a modern and state-of-art facility in the Lucknow node of UP Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC).
  • The foundation stone of the BrahMos manufacturing facility was laid by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in December last year.
  • The facility will be spread over 200 acres and produce the new BRAHMOS-NG (Next Generation) variant, which carries forward the lineage of the BRAHMOS weapons system.
  • The manufacturing centre would be ready over the next two to three years and will commence production at a rate of 80-100 BRAHMOS-NG missiles per year.
  • The BRAHMOS-NG has been envisioned as a smaller and lighter, yet smarter weapon system having more versatility, lethality and flexibility along with ultra-precision for deployment onboard a wide range of military platforms, aerial as well as naval.

Key features of BRAHMOS-NG would be:

  • Reduced Dimension & Weight for widespread usage
  • Advanced next generation stealth
  • Greater effectiveness against ECCM
  • Higher versatility in underwater combat applications
  • Launch readiness from Torpedo tube and vertical orientation
  • BRAHMOS-NG also promises to be a highly competent weapon system in the worldwide missile market by providing the existing frontline air and naval platforms of several countries with the choice of deploying a versatile, flexible and universal supersonic cruise missile system in a lighter, smaller and compact configuration without compromising on its higher speed, existing strike range, lethality, stealth and other important characteristics. The miniature missile could also be deployed in land-attack configuration.

Mega Fighter Deal For IAF & Indian Navy Could Be Split

  • The Union government is looking at splitting the mega deal for 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) for the Indian Air Force (IAF) into two separate orders, even as the Navy pursues its own fighter aircraft acquisition programme.
  • Indian defence and security establishment said that instead of acquiring 114 fighters in one go, as was planned earlier, the government is looking at going in for an initial order of 54 aircraft for the IAF.
  • This would involve 18 fighters being bought off-the-shelf from the foreign Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and 36 being built in India through a joint venture under Make In India.
  • The IAF is banking on the MRFA along with the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk 1A and the future-generation indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
