International Women’s Day

  • International Women’s Day is celebrated worldwide. On this day women are recognized for their achievements, contributions, and leadership roles.
  • The first time Women’s Day was celebrated was in the United States on February 28, 1909. This day honoured the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
  • Years later, in 1917 women in Russia chose to protest and strike for “bread and peace” on the last Sunday of February, which was 23 February; this date was March 8 as per Gregorian calendar. Before the revolution Russia had not adopted the Gregorian calendar therefore in 1917, 23 February in Russia corresponded to 8 March in the other European countries.
  • This is how the idea of Women’s Day to be celebrated on March 8 was thought of.
  • 1975 was observed as the International Women’s Year and since then March 8 is being celebrated as International Women’s Day.
  • In India, national women’s day is observed on February 13 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu, who was a pioneer in advocating for women’s rights. A political leader and a poet as well, Sarojini Naidu was called as the Nightingale of India.
  • The 2022 UN theme for International Women’s Day is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, looking to highlight the contribution of women and girls around the globe, who participate in their communities promoting on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, in order to build a more sustainable future for all.
  • As part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the week-long celebrations of International Women’s Day started on 1st March, 2022 in New Delhi. The culmination of week-long events will witness conferment of Nari Shakti Puruskar for the years 2020 and 2021 by the Honourable President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind at a special ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on 8th March, 2022. The award ceremony for the year 2020 could not be held in 2021 due to prevalent situation created by COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Honourable Prime Minister of India will also be having an interactive session with the Awardees to applaud their efforts and to inspire the masses to work for and excel in areas relating to women empowerment.
  • In all, 28 awards (14 each for the year 2020 and 2021) will be presented to 29 individuals in recognition of their exceptional work in rendering distinguished services towards empowerment of women, especially vulnerable and marginalized women.

FATF Retains Pakistan In Grey List

  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan on its ‘greylist’ or ‘increased monitoring list’. The FATF included the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with which India signed a free trade agreement in February 2021.
  • There are 17 countries on the grey list of the FATF.
  • Zimbabwe has been excluded from the list after a review found it compliant on all parameters.
  • FATF: An inter-governmental body established in 1989 during the G7 Summit in Paris. Assesses the strength of a country’s anti-money laundering and anti-terror financing frameworks, however it does not go by individual cases.

International Election Visitor Programme 2022

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) today hosted the virtual International Election Visitors Programme (IEVP) 2022 for Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from nearly 32 Countries and four international organizations.
  • An overview of the ongoing Elections for Legislative Assemblies of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh was presented to more than 150 EMB Delegates participating online.
  • Ambassadors/High Commissioners and other members of the Diplomatic Corps based in India from nine countries also participated in today’s virtual IEVP 2022.

Donate-a-Pension Programme

  • The government today launched Donate-a-Pension programme. It is an initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) pension scheme where citizens can donate the premium contribution of their immediate support staff including domestic workers, drivers and helpers. 
  • Lauching the scheme in New Delhi, Labour and Employment  Minister Bhupender Yadav said under the programmee, workers in the unorganised sector with the age group of 18 to 40 years can register themselves and deposit a minimum of  660 to 2400  rupees every year depending on their age.
  • After they attain 60 years they will receive the minimum assured pension of three thousand rupees per month.  He said the Narendra Modi government is committed to provide social security to unorganised workers. He urged trade unions to  get the workers engaged in their offices registered in PM-SYM.
  • The programme was launched as part of many initiatives by the Labour Ministry to be launched in the Iconic Week being celebrated by from 7th to 13th of this month.
  • The Minister also launched e SHRAM on the UMANG app.  Over 25 crore informal sector workers involved in 400 different occupations have registered on the e-Shram portal in the country. Mr. Yadav highlighted several initiatives taken by the government for the welfare of labourers in the country

Extension Of Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana

  • Government has approved the continuation of the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Yojana and its components for Financial Years 2021-22 to 2025-26. The proposal for continuation of the scheme was received from the Home Ministry. The decision shows the commitment of the Government to remember sacrifices of Freedom Fighters and taking inspiration from them during the year of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • Freedom Fighters and their eligible dependents have been sanctioned the Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension. Presently, there are 23 thousand 566 beneficiaries across the country covered under this scheme. The amount of pension has been revised from time to time and Dearness Relief is also given since 2020.

ISSF World Cup

  • Indian women’s 25m pistol team of Rahi Sarnobat, Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan won the gold medal by beating Singapore 17-13 in the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World cup in Cairo, Egypt yesterday. It is the 5th medal for India in the tournament.

PM Modi Speaks To Russian President Putin

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke on the phone to Russian President Vladimir Putin and discussed the evolving situation in Ukraine.
  • President Putin briefed Prime Minister Modi on the status of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian teams.
  • During the telephone conversation which lasted for about 50 minutes, Mr. Modi urged President Putin to hold direct talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in addition to the ongoing negotiations between their teams. He appreciated the announcement of the ceasefire and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in parts of Ukraine, including Sumy.
  • The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Sumy at the earliest. President Putin assured Mr. Modi of all possible cooperation in their safe evacuation.
