Boltzmann Medal 2022

  • Professor Deepak Dhar became the first Indian to win this award and shared the award with American scientist John Hopfield.
  • The chosen two scientists will be presented with the medals at the StatPhys28 conference to be held in Tokyo in August 2022.
  • Boltzmann Medal:
  • This medal is awarded every three years by the Commission on Statistical Physics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) at the Statphys Conference.
  • The IUPAP was established in 1922 in Brussels with 13 Member countries and the first General Assembly was held in 1923 in Paris. It currently has 60 country members. India joined it in 1948.
  • It is the only international physics organization that is organized and run by the physics community itself.
  • Ludwig Eduard Boltzmann was an Austrian physicist and philosopher.
  • Professor Dhar was born 1951 and completed his graduation in Science in 1970 from University of Allahabad, then master’s in physics from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in 1972. Then he went to the US for PhD.

SAMARTH Initiative

  • Union Minister for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) launched a Special Entrepreneurship Promotion Drive for Women -“SAMARTH”.
  • Under the Samarth initiative of the Ministry, the following benefits will be available to aspiring and existing women entrepreneurs:
  • 20% Seats in free Skill Development Programs organized under skill development schemes of the Ministry will be allocated for Women.
  • 20% of MSME Business Delegations sent to domestic & international exhibitions under the schemes for Marketing Assistance implemented by the Ministry will be dedicated to women-owned MSMEs.
  • 20% Discount on annual processing fee on National Small Industries Corporation’s (NSIC) Commercial Schemes.
  • NSIC is a Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of MSME.
  • Special Drive for registration of women-owned MSMEs under Udyam Registration.
  • Through this initiative, the Ministry of MSME is focusing on providing Skill Development and Market Development Assistance to women.

Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav Abhiyan

  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has called ‘Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav Abhiyan’ “an exemplary effort which will ensure more girls get the joys of education”. He also asked for efforts to make the movement a success.
  • The campaign is a mission to ensure every young girl is allowed to pursue education and skilling.

PARAM Ganga

  • As part of its tireless journey of success, National Supercomputing Mission has now deployed “PARAM Ganga”, a supercomputer at IIT Roorkee, with a supercomputing capacity of 1.66 Petaflops.
  • The system is designed and commissioned by C-DAC under Phase 2 of the build approach of the NSM. Substantial components utilized to build this system are manufactured and assembled within India along with an indigenous software stack developed by C-DAC, which is a step towards the Make in India initiative of the Government.
  • Availability of such a supercomputer will accelerate the research and development activities in multidisciplinary domains of science and engineering with a focus to provide computational power to user community of IIT Roorkee and neighbouring academic institutions.

Imagining India@2047 Through Innovation

  • Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Government of India (DARPG), in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Madras organized a three-day symposium on ‘Imagining India @2047 through innovation’ between 7th and 9th March 2022 at IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), Chennai.
  • This Symposium was organized to bring together pioneering minds in the country across the diaspora of academia, Government, and entrepreneurs to evolve a ‘Vision 2047,’ marking India’s 100th year of independence. DARPG and IITM selected around young officers working as Deputy Secretaries of Government of India, District Collectors who will be serving in 2047 and Young entrepreneurs will have teamed together to collectively brainstorm innovative solutions for benefit of the citizens.
  • Around 300 participants from all over India including Principal Secretaries (AR) of all States and all ATI’s joined the inaugural session.

GeM Adds “Stitching And Tailoring Services”

  • On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Government eMarketplace -GeM has launched Stitching and Tailoring Services on the GeM portal in partnership with USHA International Ltd through its Silai School Programme.
  • The service will open new opportunities for Usha Silai Women and self-help groups to enhance their livelihood incomes through sewing orders placed by various Government departments and agencies. It will also fulfil  three percent procurement target set aside for women MSE entrepreneurs.
  • Speaking on the occasion, PK Singh, CEO GeM said that the social inclusion of women entrepreneurs in public procurement is a core value at GeM and this service will ensure forward market linkages for women entrepreneurs”. Under this initiative, GeM will collaborate with USHA Silai School in developing stitching and tailoring service for Government buyers and facilitate the process for enlisting women associated with this programme.
  • Usha will provide technical experts who will share their knowledge on sewing and upskill women with technical skills for the fulfilment of various orders at regional and local level.
  • Government e-Marketplace is a 100 percent Government-owned company setup for procurement of goods and services by State Government and Central Government organizations.

Prasar Bharati Signs MoU With Yupp TV

  • India’s public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Yupp TV, an over-the-top (OTT) platform, which is a gateway for television viewers across the globe.
  • With this, DD India is now available on the OTT platform of Yupp TV in USA, UK, Europe, Middle East, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Through Yupp TV, one can watch live TV anytime anywhere in the world. 
  • It is aimed at expanding the global reach of DD India channel to put forth India’s perspective on various international developments on global platforms and to showcase the country’s culture and values to the world.  The content hosting agreement was signed by Prasar Bharati CEO, Shashi Shekhar Vempati and Yupp TV Founder and CEO Uday Reddy.
  • DD India, Prasar Bharati’s international channel, is India’s window to the world. Available in more than 190 countries, DD India also acts as a bridge between India and Indian diaspora spread across the world.
