92nd Anniversary of Indian Air Force 2024
Every year on October 8, India recognizes IAF Day to honor the servicemen and pilots who have sacrificed their lives for the nation and to commemorate the establishment of the IAF. This year marks the 92nd celebration, which will take place at Marina Beach in Chennai, featuring an airshow on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The theme for IAF Day 2024 is “Bhartiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar” (Potent, Powerful, and Self-Reliant). This theme reflects the IAF’s commitment to self-reliance and modernization, aligning with India’s vision for a robust defense capability.
The Indian Air Force was established on October 8, 1932, as an auxiliary force under British rule. Initially, it consisted of a limited number of aircraft and personnel. The first official flight took place on April 1, 1933, marking the beginning of its operational journey. Over the decades, the IAF has transformed into one of the world’s most formidable air forces, playing crucial roles in military operations and humanitarian missions.
In January 1950, India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth, leading the Indian Air Force (IAF) to drop its “Royal” prefix.
The two dates, mentioned above, are landmarks in the history of the IAF. On 8 October 1932, the IAF came into being and on 1st April 1954 Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee, one of the founding members of the Air Force took over as the first Indian Chief of Air Staff.

With its modernized fleet and advanced technological capabilities, the IAF plays a vital role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and enhancing regional stability. Through rigorous training, strategic partnerships, and a commitment to humanitarian missions, the IAF not only protects India’s skies but also fosters international cooperation.
