World Environment Day

  • Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.
  • In 2024, it is hosted by Saudi Arabia. 2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

  • The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from 2 to 13 December 2024.
  • World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.” 
  • We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.

21st Shangri- La Dialogue

  • The 21st edition of the Asia Pacific premier defence meet, the Shangri-La Dialogue or the Asian Security Summit, concluded in Singapore.
  • The Dialogue saw participation from over a hundred delegates worldwide, discussing pressing security challenges and exploring fresh approaches.
  • The Shangri-La Dialogue is organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in collaboration with the Singapore government.

  • ”British strategist Sir John Chipman, head of IISS, initiated the Shangri-La Dialogue in the 1990s, with support from former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.
  • The first dialogue took place in 2002. The event was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This year, the United States Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin inaugurated the main session, with China’s defence minister Admiral Dong Jun opening the following day’s session.

  • The event featured defence ministers from Indonesia, Maldives, France, South Korea, among others. Additionally, prominent leaders such as Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Philippines’ President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Timor-Leste’s President Dr. José Ramos-Horta attended. India was notably absent, though Prime Minister Narendra Modi had addressed the Dialogue in 2018.

Helen Mary Roberts

  • Dr. Helen Mary Roberts, a Christian lady, became the first woman to be promoted to the rank of one-star officer in Pakistan’s 77-year military history.
  • Her ascension coincides with increased attention being paid to atrocities against minorities in the nation with a majority of Muslims, particularly against Christians.

  • A Muslim mob in Punjab’s Sargodha district attacked a Christian factory owner, vandalized his home, and set fire to many properties on the pretext of blasphemy, prompting incensed Christian citizens to take to the streets earlier.
  • Robert’s ascent to an elite rank in the Army has been viewed by the Christian community as a ray of hope amidst these tensions. Dr. Helen Mar Roberts is a senior pathologist in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps, Brig. She has been serving in the Army for 26 years.
  • The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR),  the media and public relations wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, was quoted as saying that the brigadier was “another living example of merit and national representation” in the Army.
  • The ISPR statement further said Dr. Roberts considers it an honour to serve her country and nation while emphasising that decisions within the Pakistan Army are made without regard to religious, linguistic, or gender discrimination.
  • Before Brigadier Robert’s promotion, Major-General Nigar Johar broke gender barriers in the male-dominated Pakistani Army by becoming the first female officer to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in 2020. The officer was also appointed as the first female surgeon general of the Army.

Zupee Collaborates With Gurugram Cyber Police

  • Zupee, India’s largest skill-based Ludo platform, has partnered with Gurugram Cyber Police for the 11th edition of the Cyber Security Summer Internship Program, titled ‘Cyber Warriors’.
  • The month-long internship aims to train selected candidates in cyber security under the guidance of experts, fostering responsible digital citizenship and tackling real-world cyber threats.

  • Zupee joins forces with Gurugram Cyber Police to lead the Cyber Warriors Program, emphasizing the importance of cyber safety in an increasingly digital world. 15,000 applications were received, with 1,100 interns selected, including working professionals and college students, to undergo immersive cyber security training.
  • Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, Vikas Kumar Arora, alongside other dignitaries, inaugurated the event, underlining the commitment to enhancing cyber crime detection and prevention.

Gender Sensitisation Committee

  • Supreme Court of India has reconstituted its Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee, in accordance with the Gender Sensitisation and Sexual Harassment regulations of 2013.
  • The reconstitution, initiated by the Chief Justice of India, appoints Justice Hima Kohli as the Chairperson, alongside Justice BV Nagarathna as a Member and Dr. Sukhda Pritam as the Member Secretary.

  • The committee includes representatives from various legal bodies such as the Supreme Court Bar Association, Supreme Court Advocate-on-Record Association, and Supreme Court Bar Clerks’ Association.
  • Additionally, members nominated by the Chief Justice of India include legal practitioners and academic professionals like Shruti Pandey, Jaideep Gupta, Dr. Leni Chaudhuri, and Dr. Menaka Guruswamy.
  • Justice Hima Kohli, who has previously served as the head of the committee, continues in her role as the Chairperson, ensuring continuity in the leadership of the Supreme Court Gender Sensitisation and Internal Complaints Committee.

ISRO Extends Support To Boost India’s Space Startup

  • Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has recently started to help the country’s business space industry grow. This became clear after the successful launch of Agnibaan SOrTeD into suborbital space by the Indian start-up M/s Agnikul Cosmos.

  • ISRO gave a lot of technical help and shared its knowledge, showing that it wants to help the country build a strong space economy. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR) of ISRO was very important to the Agnibaan mission.
  • They helped choose a good location for the suborbital flight and set up the launchpad and control centre and gave their help. The launch pad, control centre, and ISRO’s main control centre were all connected to a strong network at this spot for data and communication.

  • SDSC SHAR also made safety plans and made sure that all operations were done quickly and carefully. This included coordinating launch clearances and sending out Notices to Airmen (NOTAM).
  • They also helped with logistics and sent important information for planning flights and setting launch standards.
  • The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) helped by sharing its expertise in several areas. As part of this, they helped test the semi-cryogenic engine for 15 seconds at high temperatures and did sound tests on the launch vehicle’s frame between its tanks.
  • VSSC not only offered a complete Flight Termination System, but they also ensured that the mission design was thoroughly checked and approved, and they helped with assembly and on-site integration during different stages of the launch campaign.

Chinese Spacecraft Lands On Moon’s Far Side

  • China’s national space agency announced that its Chang’e-6 probe has lifted off from the far side of the moon, starting its journey back towards Earth.
  • The probe’s successful departure from the moon means China is closer to becoming the first country to return samples from the far side of the moon, which permanently faces away from Earth.
  • The probe, which departed the moon at 7:38 am local time (2338 GMT) successfully completed its sample collection from June 2-3.

  • China National Space Administration (CNSA) said in a statement that Chang’e-6 “withstood the test of high temperature on the far side of the moon” Compared with its predecessor Chang’e-5, which retrieved samples from the near side of the moon, Chang’e-6 faced an additional technical challenge of operating without direct communications with ground stations on Earth.

World Headed For 2.7° C Warming

  • United Nations Climate head Simon Stiell has warned that the world is headed for 2.7 degrees Celsius warming, and the road to keeping it to 1.5 degrees Celsius is extremely steep.
  • He was speaking at the Bonn Climate Change Conference in Germany on Monday. Mr. Stiell said that without UN-convened international cooperation, people would be headed for global heating, which most of humanity likely could not survive.

  • The Bonn meeting from June 3 to 13 is known as halfway to the annual climate summit, also known as the 29th Conference of Parties, or COP29.
  • It is expected to set the agenda for climate negotiations this year and will open discussions on a new finance goal to replace the existing goal of 100 billion dollars per year. The new finance goal is meant to channel greater funds toward urgently needed climate action in developing countries.
