- Last month, addressing a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, President Droupadi Murmu invoked the Emergency of 1975, calling it “the biggest and darkest chapter of direct attack on the Constitution.”
- On June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency, leading to widespread persecution and suppression of media. On this day, the Emergency was declared by keeping the Constitution aside.
- This decision was taken by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and with this the people of independent India became slaves of the government. The freedom of the common people was abolished and the government started deciding how many children they would have, what they would say, what they would watch.
- Leave aside the common people, for 21 months all the leaders of the opposition were either imprisoned or were absconding. Indira Gandhi had become very powerful by imposing the Emergency.
- Parliament, court, media, no one had the power to speak against her. Today the central government has decided to celebrate this date as Constitution Hatya Diwas.
- The resolution apart, soon after taking charge as the Lok Sabha speaker, Om Birla in a statement said, “This House condemns the decision to impose the Emergency in 1975.” He called the decision to impose Emergency “dictatorship”.
