What Is Military Coup

Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina flight has reportedly landed at Hindon airport near Delhi after she fled the country amid widespread protest in India’s neighbouring country. She is expected to fly to London in the early hours of Tuesday where she has sought political asylum, reported Times Now citing sources. Hasina’s C-130 transport aircraft landed at Hindon Air Base where she was received by senior Indian Air Force officials and met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Bangladesh’s army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said the military would form an interim government. At least 300 people were killed in more than a month of deadly protests. The protests escalated despite the scheme having been scaled back by Bangladesh’s top court.

Army Coup

A coup d’état or simply a coup, is typically an illegal and overt attempt by a military organization or other government elites to unseat an incumbent leadership. A self-coup is when a leader, having come to power through legal means, tries to stay in power through illegal means.

Military coups in Bangladesh

Bangladesh has undergone several changes of government since the Proclamation of Independence in 1971. Between the first recorded uprising in August 1975 and the last known attempt in December 2011 & August 2024, Bangladesh has been through as many as 30 military coups.

BSF On High Alert Across Bangladesh Borders

In the wake of the situation in Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as the PM, BSF has sounded high alert across all its formations along the border. The Union home ministry has rushed BSF director general Daljit Singh Chaudhary to the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas district and Sunderbans area of West Bengal. There are six BSF frontiers on the Indo-Bangladesh Border and more troops have been mobilised in wake of the recent developments, added officials.

Moments after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down and the country’s army, led by Waker-Uz-Zaman, formed an interim government in Dhaka, the Border Security Force (BSF) has put all its posts on the entire 4,096-km-long border on “high alert”, people familiar with the development said.

Currently, there are 1,096 border out-posts (BOPs) of the BSF on the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) along West Bengal (2216.7 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km). The IBB is marked by difficult terrain such as hills, rivers and valleys, and the BSF is tasked to keep a strict vigil on illegal cross border activities and illegal migration from Bangladesh to India.
