Current Affairs 08 October 2024

India Maldives

  • India has extended support of 400 million dollars and a bilateral currency swap of 3,000 crore rupees to the Maldives.
  • The support will be instrumental in tackling the ongoing financial challenges faced by the Maldives.
  • The decision in this regard was taken during the delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of Maldives Dr Mohamed Muizzu in New Delhi.
  • Besides, the currency swap agreement, the two countries signed two MoUs including bilateral cooperation on preventing and combating corruption.

  • Two MoUs were also renewed between the two countries on Capacity Building Programs for Maldivian judicial officers and in the field of Sports and Youth Affairs.
  • This year State Bank of India has rolled over 100 million dollars of “Treasury Bills” of Maldives.
  • As per the requirement of the Maldives, a currency swap agreement of 400 million dollars and three thousand crore rupees has also been inked. The Prime Minister also highlighted that India has always played the role of first responder to Maldives.
  • Mr Modi informed us that the RuPay card has been launched in Maldives and in the coming time, work will be done to connect India and Maldives with UPI as well. In his statement, the President of Maldives Dr Mohamed Muizzu said he and Prime Minister Modi held extensive discussions taking stock of our successful development journey together and charting the path of future collaborations between the two countries.

  • Prime Minister Modi also virtually inaugurated the runway of Hanimaadhoo International Airport in Maldives in the presence of Dr Muizzu and also handed over 700 social housing units built under EXIM Bank’s Buyers’ Credit Facilities. RuPay card payments were introduced in Maldives and the two leaders witnessed the first such transaction.

India, Nepal

  • Nepal and India have reached the B2B Framework Agreement regarding the development of petroleum infrastructure in Nepal. Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) inked a Business to Business (B2B) Framework Agreement in New Delhi.
  • This agreement follows the Government-to-Government Memorandum of Understanding signed earlier between India’s MoP&NG and Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies on May 31, 2023.
  • The G2G MoU was exchanged in the presence of the Prime Ministers of both nations, symbolizing the strength of the India-Nepal partnership.

  • This Agreement is supposed to be a key milestone in the India-Nepal energy partnership. By Implementation of these projects, transportation of petroleum products will be convenient from India to land-linked Nepal, which will significantly reduce costs for Nepal Oil Corporation by minimizing reliance on tank trucks.
  • The infrastructure will mitigate handling losses & environmental risks, prevent road congestion resulting during tank truck movement and support Nepal’s energy security during natural disasters such as floods and landslides.

  • As per the B2B Framework Agreement, a 50-kilometre petroleum pipeline from Siliguri of India to Charali of Jhapa will be built.
  • Similarly, a Smart Greenfield Terminal will be constructed at Charali. The government of India will provide a grant for the implementation of a project to build a 62-kilometre petroleum pipeline from Amlekhgunj to Lothar of Chitwan.
  • Likewise, at Lothar, a Smart Greenfield Terminal with 91,900 kiloliters capacity will be built by the NOC with the technical assistance of the Indian government. The total cost of these projects is worth Rs 15 billion.

70th National Film Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu will confer the 70th National Film Awards for the year 2022 in New Delhi tomorrow.
  • legendary Actor Mithun Chakraborty will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest recognition in the field of Cinema. The Best Actor award will be conferred to Rishab Shetty for his stupendous performance in the Kannada film Kantara.
  • The Best Actress award will be received by Nithya Menen for the Tamil film Thiruchitrambalam and Manasi Parekh for the Gujarati film Kutch Express.

  • The award for Best Book on Cinema will be conferred to Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography authored by Anirudha Bhattacharjee and Parthiv Dhar.
  • The Best Feature Film will be given to the Malayalam film Aattam, while Ayena will be recognized as the Best Non-Feature Film.
  • Sooraj Barjatya will be honoured as the Best Director for his film Uunchai. In the feature film category, Gulmohar will receive the Best Hindi Film award and Haryanvi film Fouja will be given the Best Lyrics award in the non-feature film category.
  • In the music category, Arijit Singh will be given the Best Male Playback Singer award, and Bombay Jayashri will receive the Best Female Playback Singer award.

Nobel Prize in Medicine

  • Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the year 2024 has been awarded to scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.
  • MicroRNA is a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated. Announcing the decision, the Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, a research-led medical university in Stockholm stated that the discovery made by these two scientists has proven to be fundamentally important for understanding how organisms develop and function.
  • The winners will receive a sum of 1.1 million dollars. This year’s award is the 115th Nobel prize to be presented in physiology or medicine since 1901. Of the 229 winners, only 13 have been women.

Mahakumbh-2025

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath unveiled the new multi-colored logo for Mahakumbh 2025 at an event. Kumbh Mela, recognised by the UNESCO as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,’ is regarded as the world’s largest peaceful gathering of pilgrims.
  • Design Elements : Features a temple, a seer, an urn, the Akshayvat tree, and Lord Hanuman.

  • Spiritual Significance
  • With Motto: “Sarvasiddhipradah Kumbhah” (Kumbh bestows all types of spiritual powers).
  • Symbolizes participation from sadhus and saints across India, depicted in the logo by a sadhu blowing a conch.
  • Incorporates key religious sites along the Sangam Nagari and reflects traditions of Sanatan Dharma.

  • Geographical Importance

  • Kumbh Mela 2025 is scheduled to take place from January 14 to February 26, 2025, at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where devotees across the world will celebrate faith, tradition, and cultural heritage.

  • This grand festival is celebrated every twelve years and is marked by a series of ritual baths in the sacred rivers, particularly at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati.
  • In ancient history, the first documented reference to the Kumbh Mela dates back to the sixth century, when the Chinese traveler Xuanzang (Hüan-Tsang) noted a massive gathering of people on the banks of the Ganges.
  • There mainly four main Kumbh Melas:
  • Kumbh Mela: Occurs every four years at one of the four designated locations.
  • Ardh Kumbh Mela: Celebrated every six years and takes place only in Allahabad and Haridwar
  • Purna Kumbh Mela: Organized after 12 years based on planetary positions.
  • Maha Kumbh Mela: The largest and most significant of these gatherings, held at Prayagraj after 144 years upon completion of 12 Purna.

ISSF Junior World Shooting Championship

  • In shooting, Indian shooters topped the medals tally at ISSF Junior World Shooting Championship with an impressive 24 medals, including 13 gold, three silver, and eight bronze in Peru.
  • Italy finished in second place, while Norway took the third spot.
  • On the final day, the trio of Deepak Dalal, Kamaljeet, and Raj Chandra won the men’s 50m pistol team gold medal. Next, the shooting bonanza will shift to New Delhi for the prestigious ISSF World Cup Final in Rifle, Pistol, and Shotgun, scheduled for October 13 to 18.

Pankaj Advani

  • In Billiards, Indian cueist Pankaj Advani won the Songhe Singapore Open title with a 5-1 victory over local favourite Jaden Ong .
  • Advani took the first two frames before Ong won the third, but a key snooker by Advani in the fourth helped him regain control. He wrapped up the match with a dominant 74-6 win in the final frame. Advani will now head to Doha in November to defend his World Billiards title.
