Nobel Prize In Chemistry

  • Scientists David Baker, John Jumper, and Demis Hassabis have won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for breakthroughs in predicting and designing the structure of proteins.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced half of the prize to David Baker for computational protein design and the other half jointly to John Jumper and Demis Hassabis for protein structure prediction.

  • The Nobel Committee for Chemistry, in a statement, said David Baker built entirely new kinds of proteins, and John Jumper and Demis Hassabis developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model to solve a 50-year-old problem: predicting proteins’ complex structures.
  • Mr Baker works at the University of Washington in Seattle, United States, while Mr Hassabis and Mr Jumper work at Google DeepMind, the tech giant’s AI lab, in London.

‘Study In India’ Campaign

  • India has officially launched its ‘Study in India’ campaign at the 20th International Education Show in Sharjah, marking a significant push to attract international students to its universities.
  • Organized by EdCIL, a Miniratna company under the Ministry of Education, the campaign seeks to position India as a leading global education hub.
  • The India Pavilion at Expo Centre Sharjah was inaugurated by Ahmed Mohamed Obaid Al Naboodah of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Shri Yatin Patil, Deputy Consul General of India in Dubai.

  • The ‘Study in India’ programme showcases over 590 Indian universities and institutions, offering a variety of courses and exclusive benefits such as fee waivers and scholarships for international students.
  • The campaign highlights India’s commitment to providing quality education at affordable prices, making it an attractive destination for students from developing countries.

  • India’s higher education sector, ranked as the second largest in the world, continues to rise in global rankings. With institutions like IISc Bangalore making significant strides, India is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for students seeking affordable, high-quality education.
  • India’s education system is home to renowned institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and other centrally funded institutions, as well as emerging universities gaining global recognition.The programme has already attracted over 69,000 students for the 2024-25 academic year, with 4,000 students having already arrived in India. The International Education Show, organized in cooperation with the Sharjah Private Education Authority, is considered one of the fastest-growing and most distinguished higher education exhibitions.
  • Organized by Expo Centre Sharjah with the support of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), the event features over 100 universities and educational institutions from more than 20 countries, including India, Canada, the UK, Bahrain, Malaysia, and Cyprus.

Complete Separation From South Korea

  • North Korea announced to completely separate its territory from the South by cutting off all road and rail links and building fortifications on its side.
  • Its military said the North will permanently shut off and block the southern border.

  • The Korean People’s Army said that the move is a response to the grave situation in which the imminent danger of war is escalating day by day along the southern border.
  • Local media reported that this marks an escalation of hostility at a time when tensions between the Koreas are at their highest point in years.
  • Earlier, South Korea’s military said in July that North Korea had already been installing landmines and barriers and creating wasteland along the heavily militarized border for months this year, despite accidents.

Govt Approves Supply Of Fortified Rice

  • The Centre has approved the continuation of the supply of free Fortified Rice under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) and other welfare schemes from July 2024 to December 2028. 
  • The decision was taken at the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Briefing media on Cabinet decisions in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the initiative will reduce anaemia and micro-nutrient deficiency.
  • Mr Vaishnaw added the total financial implication will be  17 thousand and 82 crore rupees with 100 percent funding provided by the Central Government.

  • Union Minister Mr Vaishnaw added that to ensure supply of Fortified rice, a complete supply chain has been developed. He informed that an investment of 11 thousand crore rupees has been made for developing the supply chain.
  • Mr Vaishnaw said that there are 925 fortified rice manufacturers with an annual capacity of one hundred eleven lakh tonnes.
  • Rice fortification involves the addition of Fortified Rice Kernels enriched with micronutrients like Iron, Folic Acid, and Vitamin B12 as per standards prescribed by FSSAI.

  • In April, the government decided to implement the Rice fortification initiative throughout the country in a phased manner by March 2024. 
  • According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) conducted between 2019 and 2021, anaemia remains a widespread issue in the country affecting children, women, and men across various age groups and income levels.
  • Besides iron deficiency, other vitamin and mineral deficiencies, such as Vitamin B12 and folic acid, also persist, impacting the overall health and productivity of the population.
  • Food fortification has been used globally as a safe and effective measure to address anaemia and micronutrient malnutrition in vulnerable populations. Rice is an ideal vehicle for supplying micronutrients in the Indian Context as 65% of India’s population consumes rice as a staple food.

UN Human Rights Council

  • United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted the draft resolution on promoting reconciliation, accountability and human rights in Sri Lanka without a vote.
  • The resolution was adopted during the ongoing 57th Regular Session of the council in Geneva. The draft resolution is sponsored by countries including the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Malawi, Montenegro, North Macedonia and the United States of America.

  • Earlier yesterday, Sri Lanka’s Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath had told reporters that the island will continue to oppose the resolution 51/1 of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the draft resolution at the 57th session currently underway in Geneva.

  • He added that Sri Lanka has not agreed to any resolution that extends the powers of the external evidence-collection mechanism.
  • Mr Herath added that Sri Lanka remains committed to addressing key human rights issues, including reconciliation, through local mechanisms and will continue to engage in cooperative and meaningful discussions with the Human Rights Council and its regular human rights mechanisms.

First Ever Bronze Medal At Asian Table Tennis C’ships

  • Indian women’s team made history by securing a monumental bronze medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
  • This is country’s first-ever medal in the women’s team category. The Indian men’s team entered the semi-finals following a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan securing a medal.
