Children’s Day 2024
- Children’s Day is an annual observance in India, also known as ‘Bal Diwas,’ and ‘is celebrated to acknowledge children of the nation.
- This date also commemorates the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who is known for his fondness for children.
- Children’s Day celebrations date back to 1956, the United Nations previously observed it as ‘Universal Children’s Day’ on November 20.
- However, after Nehru died in 1964, the Government of India decided to mark the day to commemorate his birth anniversary.
- Since then, November 14 has been celebrated as Children’s Day in India, while the UN General Assembly-led Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20.
Amaravati Capital Project
- The dream of a world-class capital for Andhra Pradesh is advancing with a major funding boost. The World Bank and Asian Development Bank have jointly agreed to grant a loan of 13,500 crore rupees for Amaravati development project.
- The two-day long negotiations between executives of World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Union Finance Ministry and the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority in New Delhi concluded on a positive note with the World Bank and ADB giving final clearance to grant a loan of ₹13,500 crores for development of green field capital city, Amaravati.
- Titled, “the Amaravati Inclusive and Sustainable Capital City Development Program,” the program aims to build a safe and sustainable city with focus on inclusive socioeconomic growth and community development, building resilient service delivery and strengthening governance and financing frameworks.
- This financial assistance package will give the much needed impetus for development of Amaravati as the capital of Andhra Pradesh.
2024 Booker Prize
- British author Samantha Harvey has won the 2024 Booker Prize for her novel Orbital, the first book set in space to win the prize.
- Orbital contemplates the world from a different viewpoint as it follows a team of astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It is the biggest-selling book on the shortlist in the United Kingdom and has also outsold the past three Booker winners combined, up to the eve of their success.
- Ms Harvey is the first woman to win the award since 2019. She will receive 50,000 pounds. She dedicated the prize to “all the people who speak for the Earth and work for peace.”
- The name of the winner was announced at a ceremony at London’s Old Billingsgate.
Mines Ministry Signs Mou With IEA
- Ministry of Mines signed an agreement with the International Energy Agency (IEA) on cooperation in the area of critical minerals.
- This collaboration will provide India with access to reliable data, analysis, and policy recommendations in the critical minerals sector, enhancing the country’s decision-making capabilities and ensuring strategic resource management.
- It will also enable the country to streamline its policies, regulations, and investment strategies in the critical minerals sector.
- Approval for the proposal to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IEA and the Ministry of Mines was granted by the Union Cabinet on the 3rd of last month.
43rd IITF
- 43rd Edition of the India International Trade Fair (IITF) will begin at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The theme of this year’s fair is Viksit Bharat in 2047. The focus state this year is Jharkhand while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are the partner states.
India Game Developer Conference
- All is set for the 16th edition of India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) which begins in Hyderabad today. The three-day conference is expected to attract about 20 thousand attendees.
- Organized by the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI), the 16th edition of IGDC is expected to highlight the rapid growth of India’s gaming and interactive entertainment sector.
- According to the organisers, the conference will have over 150 sessions, have over 250 speakers, and host a large expo with top gaming companies, startups, and international country showcases.
- Industry icons like Jordan Weisman, creator of BattleTech, MechWarrior, and Shadowrun, Tim Morten, known for StarCraft II and Stormgate, and Bryce Johnson, co-creator of the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Microsoft’s Inclusive Tech Lab will be attending.
- The event will explore the latest trends, challenges, and innovations that are shaping the future of gaming on a global scale.
- The IGDC ranked among the top three video gaming conferences worldwide and this year’s conference will underscore the country’s rising influence in the global gaming industry.
- The India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) has become a vital platform, not just for highlighting gaming talent, but also for shaping policies and infrastructure to advance India’s video game industry.
- This year’s event will address the need for establishing dedicated gaming hubs and expanding the nation’s incubator ecosystem, inspired by the success of Telangana’s IMAGE Tower.
Brands Of India
- The 2nd edition of Brands of India, organized by the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), has gathered over 150 Indian apparel brands and white-label manufacturers at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
- This premier trade event offers a unique sourcing opportunity for retailers, chain and department stores, boutique outlets, wholesalers, agents, distributors, importers, traders, e-commerce platforms, and buying houses from around the world to procure “Made in India” textiles and other value-added products.
- Supported by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the Indian Missions in the UAE, the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), the Noida Apparel Export Cluster (NAEC), TEXMAS (Dubai), and the Readymade Garments Merchants Group (Dubai), the event aims to foster business growth and partnerships, primarily within the MENA region.
- The trade show has attracted significant interest, with over 1,200 retailers, wholesalers, and importers from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen, Egypt, Turkey, Angola, Ghana, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia, Algeria, the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, Singapore, South Africa, and other countries.
- Leveraging the benefits of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which eliminates the 5% import duty on Ready Made Garments (RMG), Brands of India further bolsters India’s competitive edge in the region, particularly against major global players.
- The standout features of Indian apparel manufacturing include cost-effective labour, the ability to fulfil small orders at competitive prices, decades of expertise in white-label manufacturing for leading global brands, and timely deliveries supported by efficient logistics systems.
- CMAI, representing the Indian apparel industry with over 5,000 members and supporting more than 25,000 retailers nationwide, has promoted the show extensively, inviting international buyers from more than 60 countries. The event is poised to strengthen business ties and create new opportunities for Indian manufacturers in the global market. The three-day fair will conclude on November 14th.
Standing Committee For Inter-State Council
- Inter-State Council Secretariat has updated its Standing Committee. This revision was announced on November 11, 2024. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been appointed as Chairman. Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved these changes.
- The new structure is effective immediately. It will apply to all future actions of the committee. Previous decisions remain unaffected.
- The revised committee consists of 12 members. It includes several Union Ministers. Notable members are Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Nirmala Sitharaman. Other members include Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Virendra Kumar, and CR Patil. Chief Ministers from various states are also part of the committee.
- These states include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. The Standing Committee aims to enhance coordination among states.
- It focuses on improving effectiveness in inter-state matters. The committee will facilitate continuous consultation. It will process matters for the Inter-State Council’s consideration. Additionally, it will handle all issues related to Centre-State relations.
