Guru Tegh Bahadur On His Martyrdom Day

  • Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of Sikhs, is being observed 24 November. It was on this in 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his life to protect religion, human values, ideals and principles. The martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur is remembered as Shaheedi Divas every year.

  • During Aurangzeb’s rule, many Hindus, including Kashmiri Pandits, were forced to convert to Islam. Unable to endure this, they sought help from Guru Tegh Bahadur. The Guru took a bold stand, declaring that if he could be converted, others would follow.
  • Despite being imprisoned for four months and witnessing the execution of three followers, Guru Tegh Bahadur remained firm in his faith. Ultimately, he was executed by beheading on 11th November 1675.

  • His sacrifice is remembered for his courage and refusal to give in to oppression.

Nayi Chetna Pahal Badlaav Ki

  • Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will launch the third edition of Nayi Chetna- Pahal Badlaav Ki on the 25th of November at Akashvani’s Rang Bhawan.

  • Nayi Chetna is a National Campaign that aims to amplify awareness and drive informed action against gender-based violence through grassroots initiatives. The Month campaign will run across all States and Union Territories till the 23rd of December.
  • The slogan for this year’s campaign is Ek Saath, Ek Awaaz, Hinsa Ke Khilaaf. It is organized by the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission under the aegis of the Rural Development Ministry. The initiative is led by an extensive Self-Help Group network under this mission.

COP29: Commit To $1.3 Trillion Baku Finance

  • At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, world leaders agreed on the Baku Finance Goal, committing 1.3 trillion dollars in climate finance for developing countries by 2035.
  • This includes a core annual target of 300 billion dollars, tripling the previous 100 billion dollars goal. Despite the progress, developing nations, including India, criticized the agreement as insufficient, calling for greater ambition to address urgent climate needs.

  • India’s  Secretary  of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Leena Nandan, said, the goal is too little and too distant. She said, our estimate tells us we need to do 1.3 trillion dollars by 2030, yet we have only 300 billion dollars a year. She said, it does not address the needs and priorities of developing countries.
  • The major key outcomes of the Baku Finance Goal included, Finalization of Article 6 on carbon markets, potentially channeling 1 trillion dollars annually by 2050 and Steps to operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund, with distribution set to begin in 2025 with Commitments to enhanced transparency and adaptation measures.

  • COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev hailed the achievements as transformative, saying, billions will turn into trillions over the next decade. However, UN Climate Chief Simon Stiell acknowledged significant work remains, urging nations to strengthen their climate plans next year.
  • Critics argue the agreement offers inadequate support to vulnerable nations. The summit concluded with calls to sustain momentum ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, in 2025.

Dr. S Jaishankar Three Day Official Visit To Italy

  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar is on a three day official visit to Italy. He will travel to Fiuggi, Italy to participate in the Outreach session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where India has been invited as a guest country.
  • He is also expected to meet his counterparts from Italy and other participating nations in the G7 related engagements and hold bilateral discussions during the visit.

  • During the visit, the External Affairs Minister will also participate in the 10th edition of the MED Mediterranean Dialogue in Rome.
  • It is being organised by Institute for International Political Studies in collaboration with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy. Dr Jaishankar will also inaugurate the new premises of the Embassy of India in Rome.

Global Peace Award In Washington

  • Association of Indian American Minorities (AIAM), a newly launched non-governmental organization, was inaugurated, at the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church in Maryland, USA.
  • The organization aims to foster unity and uplift minority communities within the Indian American diaspora.

  • During the launch event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored in absentia with the ‘Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Global Peace Award for Minority Upliftment’, recognizing his efforts in inclusive development and minority welfare.
  • His initiatives for inclusive growth and minority welfare were recognized globally. The organization has a seven-member Board of Directors representing diverse Indian minority communities: Sikhs, Christians, Hindus, Muslims, and Jews.
