‘One Nation, One Election’

  • Government has referred One Nation One Election (ONOE) bills to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for wider consultations. Union Home Minister Amit Shah told Lok Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that the bill be sent to the JPC as there should be a detailed discussion over it at every level.
  • Mr Shah’s statement came amid an uproar in the Lok Sabha as Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Law (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to enable simultaneous polls.

  • The two bills are aimed at holding Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections simultaneously in the country. The JPC is an ad hoc Committee set up by the Parliament to conduct a thorough examination of a specific subject or Bill. It consists of members from both Houses and the ruling and opposition parties.
  • However, the number of members and composition of the JPC are not limited. The JPC is dissolved after the examination is completed.
  • The JPC’s recommendations are advisory, and the government is not required to abide by its decision. The committee can also gather evidence from experts and consult public bodies, associations, individuals, and other interested parties.

Anti Pesticide Bodysuit Kisan Kavach

  • Science and Technology Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh launched India’s first-of-its-kind anti-pesticide bodysuit, Kisan Kavach in New Delhi.
  • In a statement, the Science and Technology Ministry said that this bodysuit is designed to protect farmers from the harmful effects of pesticide exposure. It said that the washable suit offers protection against pesticide-induced toxicity, which often leads to severe health complications, including breathing disorders, and vision loss.

  • Speaking at a Press Conference, Dr Singh said that the Kisan Kavach is a groundbreaking solution addressing a critical gap in farmers’ safety.
  • He said that with initiatives like Kisan Kavach, the government is not only safeguarding farmers but also advancing towards climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable development. The event also saw the distribution of the first batch of Kisan Kavach suits to farmers

Supplementary Demands For Grants

  • Lok Sabha Approved The Supplementary Demands For Grants-first Batch For 2024-2025. The Government Sought Approval Of Parliament To Authorise Gross Additional Expenditure Of Over 87 Thousand 762 Crore Rupees.
  • It Is Needed When The Amount Authorised By The Parliament Through The Appropriation Act For A Particular Service For The Current Financial Year Is Found To Be Insufficient For That Year. This Grant Is Presented And Passed By The Parliament Before The End Of The Financial Year.

Viraasat Sari Festival 2024

  • Ministry of Textiles in India is set to host the third edition of the Viraasat Sari Festival, will take place at Handloom Haat, Janpath, New Delhi, and aims to celebrate and promote India’s rich handloom heritage, particularly focusing on handwoven saris.India food delivery The Viraasat Sari Festival showcases a variety of handloom saris from across India.

  • The festival will feature 80 stalls where artisans and weavers can sell their products directly to consumers, aiming to enhance the income of handloom weavers and encourage connections with sari enthusiasts.
  • Visitors can look forward to live demonstrations of weaving and crafts. The festival will also include workshops and discussions centered on sustainability.
  • Folk dances and regional cuisines will enrich the cultural experience, making it a vibrant celebration of India’s textile traditions. The festival will highlight several unique handloom saris, including Paithani, Kota Doria, Pochampally, Kancheepuram, Jamdani, Chanderi, Banarasi Brocade, and Pashmina.
  • Paithani is a traditional handwoven sari from Maharashtra. It is known for its intricate designs and vibrant colours. Paithani saris often feature peacock motifs and gold borders. Kancheepuram saris originate from Tamil Nadu. They are renowned for their durability and rich silk. These saris often incorporate temple motifs and are popular for weddings and festivals.

Gympie-Gympie

  • Gympie-Gympie, scientifically known as Dendrocnide moroides, is considered the most toxic  plant globally. Native to Australia, it has gained notoriety due to its excruciating sting, which can induce unbearable pain and distress.

  • This pain can last for weeks or even months, leading some individuals to contemplate extreme measures. The Gympie-Gympie can grow up to 10 meters tall and features fine, needle-like hairs that are responsible for its painful sting. These hairs, known as trichomes, are found on all parts of the plant, including stems, leaves, and fruits.

  • The sting feels akin to both electrocution and burning, creating an intense and lasting discomfort. Touching the Gympie-Gympie results in pain that can persist for an extended period.
  • Reports indicate that the toxins from the plant can remain in the skin for up to a year. Symptoms may worsen with exposure to water, temperature changes, or further contact, compounding the pain and difficulty of recovery.

Padma Awardee Environmentalist Tulsi Gowda

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the passing of renowned environmentalist and Padma Awardee Tulsi Gowda from Karnataka.
  • She belongs to the Halakki indigenous tribe. She never received a formal education, and yet, today she is known as the ‘Encyclopedia of the Forest’.

  • This is because of her vast knowledge of diverse species of plants and herbs. Since the age of 12, she has planted and nurtured thousands of trees.
  • She also joined the forest department as a temporary volunteer, where she was recognised for her dedication to nature preservation. She was later offered a permanent job in the department.
  • Even at the age of 72, she continues to nurture plants and share her vast knowledge with the younger generation to promote the importance of environmental conservation. 

Cyclone Chido

  • In France’s Mayotte, at least, 22 deaths and more than 1400 injuries have been confirmed so far due to Cyclone Chido. A territory of France, Mayotte is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the coast of Mozambique.

  • Authorities said Hundreds or even thousands could be dead in the wreckage of the Cyclone. They said, With many areas still inaccessible, it could take days to determine the full extent of damage and deaths.
  • Rescue workers have been searching for survivors amid the debris of shantytowns that were bowled over by 200 kilometres per hour winds.
  • Tropical Cyclone Chido tore through the Mayotte archipelago, Comoros, and Mozambique on the southeastern coast of Africa, causing catastrophic damage and loss of life.

Treesa-Gayatri

  • In Badminton, Indian women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, achieved their career-best world ranking of 11 in the latest BWF World Rankings, released.
  • The pair had a decent outing at the BWF World Tour Finals, defeating higher-ranking Pearly Tan and Thinnah Muralitharan of Malaysia and came close to stunning World No. 1 Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China.

  • The only Indian shuttlers in the world’s top 10 across categories, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are currently ranked ninth in the world after a relatively inactive season.
  • They have not played much since their quarterfinal exit from the 2024 Paris Olympics due to Satwik’s injury. In the men’s singles, Lakshya Sen remains the best Indian male shuttler with a world ranking of 12, while no other Indian is ranked in the top 25.
  • In women’s singles, PV Sindhu jumped one place to become world number 15 after her exploits at the Syed Modi India International, last month.

Riya Shirish Thatte

  • In Shooting, Riya Shirish Thatte of Aurangabad clinched the gold medal in the women’s 25m pistol final of the 67th National Shooting Championship Competitions in New Delhi.

  • She defeated Punjab’s Simranpreet Kaur Brar 7-2 in a shoot-off after both had tied at 31 hits in the eight series of five-shots decider. This is Riya’s first senior national title.
  • Olympian and former Asian Games champion Rahi Sarnobat was third with 25 hits. The shotgun and pistol competitions of the National Shooting Championship are being held in New Delhi, while Bhopal is holding the rifle nationals.
