Lebanon Army Chief Joseph Aoun elected as Country’s New President
- Lebanon’s parliament elected Army Chief Joseph Aoun as the country’s new president on Thursday, bringing an end to a prolonged political deadlock and presidential vacancy.
- After his election, Aoun stepped down from his military role and arrived at the parliament in civilian attire to be sworn in.
- Notably, Hezbollah, the most heavily armed militant group in the Middle East, had significant influence in several countries until it suffered heavy losses in a recent war with Israel.
- This conflict, along with the weakening of its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has reignited domestic debate on disarming the group.
HAL to Take Call On Clearance To Grounded ALH
- Having put flying all 330 ALH Dhruvs on hold after the recent crash in Porbandar, HAL is carrying out a detailed analysis of the crash and is expected to take a call on Saturday on whether the Indigenous chopper fleet can resume flying operations or continue to remain on the ground.
- The flying operations of the 330 ALH Dhruvs were stopped after an Indian Coast Guard chopper with three personnel crashed during a routine training sortie. All three personnel lost their lives in the crash.
- The design review of the ALH choppers was done by a Netherlands-based firm and it stated that the design of the choppers was okay and there was nothing wrong with it.
- The engines have also been reviewed by the HAL with the French company Safran which is the partner for the manufacturing of Shakti engines used by the ALH Dhruv fleet.
Rajnath Singh to chair Ambassadors’ Round-Table
- As a prelude to Aero India 2025, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will chair the Ambassadors’ Round-Table in New Delhi on January 10, 2025. Invitations have been extended to Ambassadors and High Commissioners of over 150 friendly countries for participating in the event.
- They would be briefed on the major events of Aero India 2025 and extended a personal invite from Raksha Mantri for their senior most leadership. Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence & Armed Forces would be attending the event.The 15th edition of Aero India – Asia’s biggest aero show – is scheduled to be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka in Bengaluru, Karnataka from February 10 to 14, 2025.
- Aero India attracts a large number of exhibitors from the world’s leading industries in the field of aerospace and defence. It provides a unique opportunity for the industry to showcase their capabilities, products and services to the targeted audience. The biennial event serves as a platform for industry leaders to connect and shape the future of aerospace & defence industries.
Why is Iran looking to change its capital?
- The country is mulling moving its capital from Tehran to Makran in the southern region. Ynet News quoted Iran’s government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani as saying that the country is eyeing relocating its capital from Tehran to the country’s south.
- Tehran was established as Iran’s capital over 200 years ago. This was done by Āghā Moḥammad Khān, the first ruler of the country’s Qājār dynasty.
- The Makran region is in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, near its southern coast and the Gulf of Oman.
- Tehran is battling environmental issues and a high population density.
- Some Tehran residents are facing power shortages, while others are battling a water crisis

Amit Shah Chairs A Review Meeting at the Bureau of Police Research & Development
- Amit Shah chaired a review meeting at the BPR&D, New Delhi. Union Home Secretary, Director General BPR&D, Senior Officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Bureau’s Officers were present in the meeting.
- Home Minister took an overview of the six Divisions of BPR&D as well as outlying units (CAPT Bhopal and CDTIs), their achievements, ongoing tasks, and future roadmap. He also took a special review of the efforts and initiatives by BPR&D towards the implementation of the New Criminal Laws (NCL).
