AFMC Pune Hosts Workshop on Neonatal Resuscitation to Enhance Healthcare Training for Military Medical Professionals

The Department of Paediatrics at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune has successfully conducted a two-day workshop dedicated to Basic and Advanced Neonatal Resuscitation. Held from January 24 to 25, 2025, the workshop was organized under the IAPFGM Project, with a strong focus on the critical “First Golden Minute” (FGM) of neonatal care. This initial minute is crucial for saving lives and ensuring the health of newborns right after birth.

The workshop saw the participation of over 84 healthcare professionals, including Paediatricians, Anaesthesiologists, Gynaecologists, and Nursing Officers from various facilities within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). With a goal of enhancing emergency response capabilities, the training aimed to equip attendees with vital techniques for neonatal resuscitation, thereby improving their skills to effectively manage urgent situations involving newborns.

This initiative aligns with AFMC’s commitment to providing high-quality neonatal care, reinforcing its esteemed reputation as a leading medical institution in India, known for its dedication to education and research. Participants not only received certification upon completion of the workshop but also gained a deeper understanding of prompt and effective resuscitation methods. This knowledge is particularly important in combating neonatal mortality rates, which are significantly impacted by conditions such as birth asphyxia—one of the leading causes of neonatal deaths in the country.

The successful execution of this workshop marks a significant advancement in the neonatal care capabilities of AFMS hospitals. By ensuring that healthcare professionals are well-prepared to manage emergencies in newborn care, the initiative contributes to the overall health and well-being of military families, providing them with critical support during the early stages of life for their children.
