In a significant advancement for its military capabilities, Ukrainian defense contractor Ukrspecsystems has introduced the Shark-M unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This cutting-edge drone is designed for deep reconnaissance operations and can additionally function as a signal repeater for strike drones, enhancing their operational effectiveness in the field.
The Shark-M retains the same wingspan of 3.4 meters (11 feet) as its predecessor, the Shark-D, but this new model boasts a markedly improved communications range of up to 180 kilometers (111 miles). This enhancement makes the Shark-M particularly well-suited for long-distance missions, expanding the operational envelope for its users.
Powered by batteries that offer 170 percent more capacity than those found in older UAV models, the Shark-M is designed for extended flight durations, capable of remaining airborne for up to seven hours. This capability allows the drone to operate effectively both during the day and at night, regardless of varying weather conditions, making it a versatile asset in a range of scenarios.
The UAV has a compact design, measuring 165 centimeters (5.4 feet) in length and standing 30 centimeters (almost one foot) tall. It can carry a maximum take-off weight of 14.5 kilograms (31 pounds) and is capable of climbing to altitudes of up to 3,000 meters (9,842 feet). The drone can reach a top speed of 130 kilometers (80 miles) per hour, which enhances its operational speed during missions.
Noteworthy features of the Shark-M include a camera capable of continuous 360-degree rotation, supported by advanced sensors that can detect ground targets from impressive distances—up to 35 kilometers (21 miles) during the daytime and 14 kilometers (8 miles) at night. The UAV is also equipped with a universal connector that facilitates compatibility with various gyro-stabilized electro-optical systems, allowing for greater flexibility in mission planning and execution.
To bolster its resilience against electronic warfare, the Shark-M incorporates a new radio modem that is reportedly 250 percent stronger than its predecessor’s, along with an upgraded ground control station. Enhanced ease of use is another highlight of the Shark-M; operators will find it simpler to control compared to earlier models, and it can instantly generate detailed mission reports, saving valuable time in operational contexts.
Moreover, the UAV is designed with crew safety in mind. It features a domestically produced platform with an extension kit that positions the antenna away from the operator, as well as a remote control terminal. This focus on safety is complemented by the drone’s innovative takeoff and landing systems; the Shark-M employs a catapult launch system, making it adaptable for deployment from various locations without the need for a traditional runway. It also utilizes a parachute landing system, which significantly reduces the risk of damage upon landing.
Through the introduction of the Shark-M, Ukrspecsystems showcases its commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s tactical capabilities in an increasingly complex battlefield environment, further solidifying the nation’s defense infrastructure.
