World Cancer Day
- World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4th, serves as a powerful reminder to raise awareness, take action, and reduce the global burden of this life-threatening condition. This day encourages individuals, communities, and governments to come together in the fight against cancer
- World Cancer Day was officially established on 4th February 2000, during the World Cancer Summit for the New Millennium held in Paris.
- The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) organized the summit, bringing together leaders, healthcare professionals, and policymakers from around the world to highlight the urgent need to address the cancer crisis.
- The Paris Charter, signed at the summit, laid the groundwork for World Cancer Day. It aimed to, Promote research into cancer causes, treatment, and prevention, Improve patient care and support, Raise awareness of cancer’s growing impact, Mobilize governments, communities, and individuals to act in combating the disease.
- The theme for World Cancer Day 2025, “United by Unique,” marks the launch of a three-year campaign that will run until 2027.
- The core focus of this theme is to emphasize the personalized journey of each cancer patient, as well as the importance of individualized care and inclusivity in cancer treatment.

‘SwaRail’ SuperApp
- Railway Ministry has released an application called SuperApp, a one-stop solution offering multiple public-facing services. The app provides easy access to services like reserved and unreserved ticket bookings, platform and parcel bookings, train inquiries, PNR inquiries, help through RailMadad and more.
- The core emphasis of the app is to enhance user experience through a seamless and clean user interface. It not only combines all services in one place but also integrates several services to provide users with a complete package of Indian Railway services.
International Big Cat Alliance
- Environment Ministry announced that the Framework Agreement on the establishment of the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) has officially come into force.
- The IBCA and its Secretariat have become a full-fledged, treaty-based, inter-governmental international organization and legal entity as of January 23. Five countries – Nicaragua, Eswatini, India, Somalia, and Liberia – have deposited their instruments of ratification under the Framework Agreement. As of now, 27 countries, including India, have consented to join the IBCA.
- Several international and national organizations working in the field of wildlife conservation have also partnered with the IBCA.
- IBCA was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 9, 2023, during the ‘Commemorating 50 years of Project Tiger’ event. Last year, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of the IBCA, with its headquarters in India.
- It was launched with the aim of conserving seven big cats: the Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
Canada, Mexico Order Retaliatory Tariffs
- Canada and MEXICO have ordered retaliatory tariffs on goods from the United States. This follows US President Donald Trump ordering sweeping tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico and China.
- Canada is initially targeting US 30 billion dollars in goods imported from the US with tariffs of 25 per cent. The restrictions will come into force from tomorrow. A second list will be unveiled soon and will be implemented after public consultation.
- This will include passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminium products, certain fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy products and more.
- Mexico has declared that it will impose retaliatory tariffs, without mentioning any rate and products. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke on the phone on Saturday after Trump’s administration imposed a sweeping 25 per cent tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico, and 10 per cent on imports from China.
- Canada’s Prime Minister’s office in a statement said that Canada and Mexico agreed to enhance the strong bilateral relations. Canada is the largest export market for 36 states and Mexico is the largest trading partner of the US.
- Canada and Mexico ordered the tariffs despite Trump’s further threat to increase the duties charged if retaliatory levies are placed on American goods.
- At the local level, some authorities in provinces like Ontario, British Columbia and Nova Scotia will remove American liquor brands from government store shelves.
Mount Taranaki Becomes A Legal Person
- New Zealand as the country’s Parliament passed a law that grants Mount Taranaki, also known as Taranaki Maunga, legal personhood. This unprecedented decision recognizes the mountain as a living entity with rights similar to those of a human being.
- This move is deeply rooted in the Māori people’s spiritual and cultural beliefs and aims to correct past injustices while promoting environmental conservation. Mount Taranaki holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for the Māori tribes.
- For centuries, it has been regarded not just as a mountain but as an ancestor, a figure of cultural identity. Māori people view the mountain as a living being that is central to their heritage and traditions.
- The recognition of Taranaki Maunga as a legal person reflects this long-standing relationship, marking a momentous step in honoring the Māori worldview and understanding of the natural world.
- New legislation establishes Mount Taranaki as a legal entity known as Te Kāhui Tupua. This grants the mountain rights similar to those of humans, with the ability to hold responsibilities, seek legal representation, and even pursue legal actions if necessary.
- A governing body made up of local Māori iwi (tribes) and appointees from the Conservation Minister will oversee the management and protection of the mountain. This ensures that Māori communities will play a crucial role in decision-making processes, making the cultural connection to the land an integral part of the mountain’s future care.
- Legal rights granted to Taranaki Maunga are designed to protect its health and wellbeing. These rights will help prevent forced sales of the land and promote conservation efforts.
- The mountain’s management will focus on restoring traditional practices and protecting native wildlife, ensuring that it remains a vibrant ecosystem. The country has already taken similar steps with the Whanganui River in 2017 and Te Urewera forest in 2014.
- This recognition highlights an increasing global awareness of the need to protect and respect nature, acknowledging that ecosystems and natural landscapes are vital to the well-being of communities, particularly Indigenous peoples.
