Fort William Renamed As Vijay Durg

  • Indian Army’s Eastern Command headquarters, Fort William, was officially renamed Vijay Durg. This change reflects India’s ongoing efforts to shed colonial legacies and honour its indigenous military history.
  • The decision to rename the fort was made in December 2024, marking a historic shift from British influence in recognition of India’s past. Additionally, Kitchener House inside Fort William was renamed Manekshaw House, and St. George’s Gate has been renamed Shivaji Gate.

  • Fort William was constructed by the British in 1781. It was named after King William III of England. The fort served as a key military stronghold during British rule in India.
  • Its strategic location on the eastern banks of the River Hooghly made it vital for controlling trade and military operations in Bengal. The name ‘Vijay Durg’ pays tribute to a historic fort along Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg coast. This fort was an important naval base during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The renaming marks India’s military heritage and aims to replace colonial references with indigenous ones.

President Trump Withdrawing US From UNHRC

  • President Donald Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), prohibiting any future funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. President Trump also directed the US to review its participation in the UN’s Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
image 152
  • The Executive order said that the United States helped found the United Nations after World War II to prevent future global conflicts and promote international peace and security.
  • Mr. Trump halted funds for UNRWA during his first term. President Joe Biden put a block on US funds for UNRWA in January 2024. U.S. remains the largest financial contributor to the U.N., and changes to funding could lead to shifts in global humanitarian efforts.
  • Trump argued that the U.N. was not living up to its potential in resolving conflicts and mediating peace. Specific mention was made of the U.N. Security Council’s failure to resolve conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

  •  US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing sanctions on the International Criminal Court accusing it of illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and its close ally Israel. The measure places financial and visa restrictions on individuals and their families who assist in ICC investigations of American citizens or allies. The order Trump signed, said, the ICC has no jurisdiction over the United States or Israel, adding that the court had set a dangerous precedence with its actions against both countries. Trump’s action came as Netanyahu was visiting Washington. Neither the U.S. nor Israel is a member of or recognizes the court.
  • ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November last year over alleged war crimes in Gaza. The ICC also issued a warrant for a Hamas commander. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed during the Israeli military’s response after the Hamas attack in October 2023.

ISRO Unveils FEAST 2025 Software

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has introduced the latest version of its structural analysis software, Finite Element Analysis of Structures (FEAST) 2025, at the 8th National Finite Element Developers’/FEAST Users’ Meet (NAFED08) held at IIT Hyderabad.
image 158
  • The event, organized in collaboration with Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), brought together over 250 experts from academia, industry, and research institutions to discuss advancements in finite element-based structural analysis. FEAST is an indigenous finite element analysis (FEA) software developed by ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
  • It is designed to predict how structures react to real-world forces like stress, strain, and temperature variations. Until now, Indian industries and research institutions had to rely on costly foreign software for structural analysis. With FEAST, ISRO is providing a made-in-India, customizable, and cost-effective solution, particularly beneficial for students, researchers, and industries.
  •  FEAST has been made available to academia at a much lower price than its international counterparts, ensuring that Indian institutions can access high-quality engineering software without heavy financial constraints.
image 159
  • FEAST plays a key role in ISRO’s high-profile space missions. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan highlighted in his address that the software has been used in structural design analysis for projects such as:
  • Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight Mission – India’s ambitious manned space mission.
  • Bharatiya Antariksh Station – The proposed Indian space station.
  • Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV) – The future of India’s launch vehicle technology.
