A momentous occasion unfolded recently as the Lamp Lighting Ceremony of 29 Nursing Cadets from the XI Batch of the College of Nursing took place at the esteemed Army Hospital (Research & Referral). This event marked a significant milestone as it symbolized the formal initiation of these cadets into the esteemed and noble profession of nursing.
The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering that included senior military officers, members of the Military Nursing Service (MNS), retired veterans, and notable representatives from civil nursing institutions. Their presence highlighted the rich traditions and enduring ethos of the Military Nursing Service, underscoring the importance of the event.
Keynote remarks were delivered by Lt Gen Shankar Narayan, the Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R). In his address, he conveyed the importance of essential nursing values such as compassion, dedication, and professionalism. He urged the cadets to uphold the highest standards of professional excellence, embrace selfless service—an integral aspect of military nursing—and to foster qualities such as empathy, resilience, and lifelong learning as they embark on their professional journeys.
A pivotal moment of the ceremony was the administration of the Nurse’s Pledge, conducted by Major General Sheena PD, the Additional Director General of the Military Nursing Service. This pledge emphasizes the cadets’ commitment to maintaining ethical nursing practices, providing exceptional patient care, and upholding professional integrity throughout their careers.
The significance of the Lamp Lighting Ceremony is rooted in the legacy of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The act of lighting the lamp symbolizes the transmission of knowledge and wisdom from mentors to students, serving as a beacon of hope, healing, and dedication to humanity. It also marks the cadets’ transition from the theoretical aspects of their studies to practical application in clinical settings, as they embrace their new roles as guardians of health and well-being.
Beyond being a ceremonial milestone, this event marks the beginning of a lifelong commitment to service, care, and compassion within the Armed Forces Medical Services for the cadets. The Indian Armed Forces continue to reinforce the noble traditions of the Military Nursing Service, dedicated to cultivating a culture of excellence, strong leadership, and humanitarian service within the field of healthcare.
