France’s Ministry of Defence has officially received the final NH90 Caïman Tactical Transport Helicopter from Airbus, marking a significant milestone in the enhancement of the country’s rotorcraft fleet. This delivery is part of a broader initiative aimed at modernizing the French Army’s aviation capabilities, which began in 2011 with the goal of acquiring a total of 63 NH90 helicopters. These aircraft are configured in the “Standard 1” format, which emphasizes improved logistics capabilities tailored to the needs of military operations.
With this recent delivery, the French Army is set to transition into the next phase of its rotorcraft project, which includes an additional order of 18 NH90s in a more advanced “Standard 2” version expected to be delivered between 2026 and 2029. Unlike the initial batch, the forthcoming helicopters will be specially designed for special operations units, featuring increased internal space, upgraded components, and enhanced capacity for transporting personnel.
The current modernization effort reflects a strategic decision to gradually phase out the aging fleet of Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma helicopters, which have been in service since the late 1960s. The NH90 Caïman is seen as a critical upgrade, providing not only more modern technology but also improved operational flexibility.
Characteristically, the NH90 Caïman measures approximately 20 meters (or 66 feet) in length, with a rotor diameter of 16 meters (52 feet). Each helicopter is equipped with two powerful turboshaft engines capable of producing up to 2,400 horsepower. The NH90 can accommodate up to 20 seated soldiers, transport 10 medical evacuation stretchers, or carry over 4,000 kilograms (approximately 8,818 pounds) of payload externally.
In terms of performance, this versatile helicopter can fly at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour (186 miles per hour), boasts a range of 1,600 kilometers (994 miles), and can reach a service ceiling of 3,500 meters (11,483 feet). For combat missions, the NH90 Caïman is designed to be outfitted with various armaments, including door-mounted machine guns, a 20-millimeter cannon pod, rocket pods, and missiles capable of engaging targets across multiple domains.
This significant advancement in the French Army’s helicopter capabilities underscores a commitment to ensuring the military remains equipped with modern and effective aerial support as it adapts to evolving operational demands.
