Guru Ravidas Jayanti
- Guru Ravidas Jayanti, a revered festival in North India, holds special significance in Punjab as it marks the birth anniversary of the renowned saint and poet, Guru Ravidas.
- A prominent figure in the Bhakti movement, he was also known as Bhagat Ravidas. Guru Ravidas Jayanti will be observed on, February 12, 2025, marking his 648th birth anniversary.
- Guru Ravidas was born in the Uttar Pradesh village of Seer Govardhanpur in 1377 CE. He is also referred to as Raidas, Rohidas, and Ruhidas. He was the disciple of the revered Brahmin bhakti poet Ramananda. He was a well-known poet.
- 41 of his devotional songs and poems are included in the Sikh Scriptures, Guru Granth Sahib. Meera Bai, a revered figure in Hindu spiritualism, is said to have considered Guru Ravidas as her spiritual Guru.
- The Guru’s teachings now form the basis of the Ravidassia religion. Ravidassias believe that Guru Ravidas should be treated as a saint just like the other gurus, as he lived before the first Sikh Guru and his teachings were studied by the Sikh Gurus.
‘Gulf Of America Day’
- US President Donald Trump has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and designated February 9 as “Gulf of America Day” through an executive order.
- The order, titled “Restoring Names That Honour American Greatness” (Executive Order 14172), instructs the US Secretary of the Interior to formalise the name change within 30 days.
- The executive order defines the newly named Gulf as including the “US Continental Shelf area bounded to the northeast, north, and northwest by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to the maritime boundary with Mexico and Cuba”.
Lam Research Announces ₹10,000 Crore
- Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that Lam Research has announced a major investment of over 10 thousand crore rupees in India. In a social media post, Mr. Vaishnaw said it is one more milestone in India’s semiconductor journey.
- He said it is a big vote of confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s semiconductor vision. Lam Research Corporation is an American supplier of wafer-fabrication equipment and related services to the semiconductor industry.
- Lam Research has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Karnataka government to lease and eventually purchase a land parcel at Whitefield in Bengaluru,
World’s Largest Jhumur Festival
- Assam will host the world’s largest Jhumur dance, also called Jhumoir, on February 24, 2025, ahead of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment Summit.
- With over 7,500 dancers, the event aims for a Guinness World Record and will be attended by PM Narendra Modi.
- This summit is a platform to showcase Assam’s rich traditions to a global audience and attract investors.
- The two-day event is expected to draw investors from all around India and the world, solidifying Assam’s standing as a new investment destination in the country.
‘Operation Devil Hunt’
- Bangladesh has launched a large-scale security operation, “Operation Devil Hunt,” targeting loyalists of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The move comes after protesters were attacked by gangs allegedly linked to Hasina’s regime.
- The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has vowed to restore order and uphold democratic values. The unrest was sparked by reports of Hasina’s possible address from exile in India, leading to vi olent protests, including the destruction of buildings linked to her family.
- Meanwhile, tensions between India and Bangladesh have risen over India’s condemnation of the demolition of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Gangs allegedly loyal to Sheikh Hasina attacked student protesters, leaving several injured.
- Government Response: The interim government, led by Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, initiated “Operation Devil Hunt” to dismantle pro-Hasina forces.
- Goal of the Operation: Chowdhury declared that the crackdown would continue until “the devils are uprooted.” The unrest intensified after reports emerged that Hasina, in exile in India, was planning a virtual address.
- Destruction of Hasina-Linked Buildings: Protesters demolished buildings associated with Hasina’s family, including the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, using excavators.
- Interim Leader’s Call for Calm: Nobel laureate and interim leader Muhammad Yunus urged protesters to uphold democracy and human rights.
- Indian MEA’s Statement: India condemned the destruction of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, calling it an attack on Bangladesh’s national consciousness.
- Bangladesh’s Response: The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry rejected India’s statement, calling it “unexpected and unwarranted”, asserting that Bangladesh does not interfere in India’s internal matters.
Global Best M-Gov Award
- Three Indian computer science students from New Delhi won the Bronze Award at the Global Best M-Gov Award 2025 during the World Government Summit (WGS) in Dubai. The accolade recognises innovative technological solutions advancing mobile government services and societal progress.
- The award, along with a cash prize of $10,000, was presented by Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, during the opening day of the summit. The winning team comprised Sagar Teotia (team lead), Abhinav Mishra, and Anushka Singh, all fourth-semester computer science students from Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology, Delhi, who were recognised for their application ‘AccessWay.’.
- The AI-powered platform integrates augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence, and crowdsourced data to provide accessible navigation, social connections, and emergency tools for individuals with disabilities.
- The app promotes independence by offering personalised route planning with AR overlays and real-time voice assistance for visually impaired users. It enables community-driven mapping of accessible spaces and allows businesses to gain accessibility certifications, attracting a more diverse audience.
- Users who contribute valuable data on accessibility features are rewarded with incentives, fostering a sustainable and inclusive ecosystem.The organising committee praised the team for their creative and scalable solution aimed at fostering social inclusion and accessibility for all.
- The ‘M-Gov Award’ and ‘GovTech Award’ are prestigious annual honours presented by the UAE government as part of the World Government Summit. With submissions from 74 countries, over 3,500 entries, and 60 shortlisted finalists, the awards recognised six winners for their groundbreaking contributions. These accolades seek to inspire students, researchers, government entities, private sector companies, and startups to leverage advanced technologies to address global and local challenges, fostering sustainable solutions for a better future.
Paris AI Summit
- Paris AI Summit was co-chaired by India and France at the Grand Palais, Paris. The summit builds on previous AI summits held in UK (November 2023) and South Korea (May 2024). First AI Summit (2023, UK) & Bletchley Park Declaration Known as the AI Safety Summit. 28 countries, including India, US, UK, EU, and China, signed the Bletchley Park Declaration. The declaration aimed to regulate Frontier AI systems (advanced AI) to prevent misuse (terrorism, crime).
- Second AI Summit (2024, Seoul) : 16 major AI companies pledged to develop AI with transparency. It highlighted the need for responsible AI development.
- About the Third AI Summit (2o25, Paris) : Jointly chaired by PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, it witnessed the participation of over 90 countries.
- During the summit, French President Macron is pushing for tech sovereignty. Tech sovereignty is a country’s ability to control and develop its own technology for economic, political, and social well-being.
- Germany defines it as the ability of a state to implement policies without being dependent on foreign technology. It is linked to terms like strategic autonomy, digital sovereignty, and regulatory sovereignty.
- The concept gained importance due to Western sanctions on countries like Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, and Russia. A side event to discuss global AI policies and India-France cooperation was organized during the summit. The Second India-France Al Policy Roundtable was organized by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Indian Government, along with IISc Bengaluru, IndiaAI Mission, and Sciences Po Paris.
