Philippine Army Confirms Cyber Breach Affecting 10,000 Soldier Records

The Philippine Army has confirmed a breach in its network infrastructure, attributed to an unnamed cybercrime group. This incident, as disclosed by Philippine Army Spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala, involved an “illegal access attempt” that fortunately did not result in any known damage or data theft. The Philippine Army has reportedly identified the responsible group and is actively implementing counter-measures to enhance cybersecurity and prevent similar events in the future.

Col. Dema-ala clarified that the breach constituted illegal access rather than hacking, emphasizing the Army’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its cyber defense capabilities. This effort is part of the Philippine Army’s Cyber Security Enhancement Program, which plays a crucial role in the broader modernization initiative currently underway within the military branch.

Days prior to this revelation, the digital security advocacy organization Deep Web Konek reported a separate incident affecting the Army’s network. According to their findings, sensitive personal and operational information of military personnel had been compromised. Specifically, around 10,000 records belonging to both active and discharged service members from the period of 2018 to 2024 were implicated in this breach. Deep Web Konek connected the attack to a hacking group known as “Philippine Exodus Security,” which had previously attempted to disrupt the data systems of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Manila. This same group was also linked to a recent disinformation campaign aimed at the national charity sweepstakes agency.

In light of the cyberattack on the Army, the Philippine Navy has expressed its support for efforts to apprehend the hackers targeting the armed forces. The Navy has initiated a comprehensive investigation concerning the breach and is taking the necessary actions to safeguard the integrity of its own systems. Philippine Navy Spokesperson Cmdr. John Percie Alcos highlighted that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility and called on the public to collaborate positively in protecting national security. He reaffirmed the Navy’s dedication to fortifying its cybersecurity defenses against potential threats.
