Global Wealth Report

  • India has emerged as a leading global wealth hub, with a current population of 85,698 High Net-Worth Individuals (HNWIs), placing it fourth globally, behind only the US, China, and Japan, according to the latest Global Wealth Report by property consulting firm Knight Frank.
image 266
  • The number of HNWIs—defined as individuals with at least US$1 million in investable assets—rose by 4.4% globally in 2024, reaching over 2.3 million people. Notably, the population of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), those with assets exceeding US$100 million, surpassed 100,000 for the first time, reflecting a broader trend of growing wealth across the world.
  • America continues to dominate as the world’s primary wealth creator, with nearly 40% of global HNWIs residing in the US, a figure far surpassing China, which holds 20%, and Japan, which accounts for just over 5%.

World Sustainable Development Summit 2025

  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav has inaugurated the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2025 in New Delhi.
image 268
  • The summit-themed Partnerships for Accelerating Sustainable Development and Climate Solutions was Organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
  • The event was attended by distinguished dignitaries, including Prime Minister of Guyana, Brigadier Mark Phillip, and Brazil’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, were present at the event.

Cheetah Reintroduction Plan

  • After Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, cheetah introduction will be expanded to Banni Grasslands in Gujarat and Gandhisagar Sanctuary of Madhya Pradesh.
  • African cheetahs were reintroduced at Kuno National Park in two batches in September 2022 and February 2023. Banni Grasslands is a 2,500 sq km protected forest in the Kutch district of Gujarat that supports numerous animal genetic resources like Banni buffalo, Kankrej cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and horses.
image 269
  • The grassland is a breeding and nesting ground for more than 250 bird species, including resident and winter migratory birds. Gandhisagar Sanctuary in eastern Madhya Pradesh spreads over Mandsaur and Neemuch districts. It is known as Nimar region, with borders touching Rajasthan and is more or less dry.
  • The sanctuary is spread over the area surrounding Gandhisagar dam backwater, and is known for some rare wildlife species like wild dogs (dholes), chinkaras, leopards, otters and crocodiles.
  • Under the “Action Plan for Reintroduction of Cheetah in India”, around 50 cheetahs are estimated to be brought from African countries to various national parks over five years.

Oldest Meteorite Impact Crater

  • In Australia, scientists have identified the oldest known meteorite impact crater on Earth, a discovery that could greatly reshape the understanding of the planet’s formation and the origins of life.
  • Curtin University researchers investigated rock layers in the North Pole Dome, an area of the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and found evidence of a major meteorite impact 3.5 billion years ago.
  • Before the discovery, the oldest impact crater was 2.2 billion years old, so this is by far the oldest known crater ever found on Earth.
image 271
  • Researchers identified the crater through the presence of shatter cones, unique rock formations created under the extreme pressure of a meteorite impact. These formations found about 40 km west of Marble Bar in the Pilbara region, were formed when a meteorite struck the area at over 36,000 km per hour.
  • An impact crater is a depression formed on the surface of a solid astronomical body (like a planet or moon) when a smaller object (like a meteoroid, asteroid, or comet) collides with it at high velocity.

US Supreme Court Rejects

  • US Supreme Court has rejected a plea by Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, seeking to block his extradition to India. Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, had filed an Emergency Application for Stay.
  • He argued in his plea that his extradition to India would violate the US law and the United Nations Convention Against Torture. The plea cited medical records showing that he has multiple acute and life-threatening diagnoses, including multiple documented heart attacks, Parkinson’s disease with cognitive decline, a mass suggestive of bladder cancer, stage 3 chronic kidney disease, a history of chronic asthma, and multiple COVID-19 infections. Rana’s extradition was cleared by US President Donald Trump last month.

  • In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump announced that Rana’s extradition had been approved. He is wanted in India for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists.
image 273
  • Eight locations in Mumbai were targeted by terrorists on 26 November 2008, which claimed the lives of over 174 people. He also faces charges in India for providing logistical support to LeT. He was found guilty in the US for assisting the group, and India has long sought his extradition. He is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators of the 26/11 attacks.

UN Releases Report On Women’s Rights

  • United Nations report revealed that nearly a quarter of governments reported a backlash against gender equality. This report, released by UN Women, coincided with International Women’s Day on 8 March. It brought into light the urgent need to protect and advance women’s rights amid increasing threats. The report, titled “Women’s Rights in Review 30 Years After Beijing,” indicates that many women and girls are facing heightened discrimination.
image 274
  • Legal protections have weakened, and resources for gender-focused programmes are dwindling. The last three decades have seen progress since the 1995 Beijing Declaration. However, misogyny is becoming mainstream rather than equal rights. Since 1995, 1,531 legal reforms have been enacted to support gender equality. Yet, women still hold only 64 per cent of the legal rights men enjoy.
  • While 88 per cent of countries have laws against gender-based violence, enforcement remains inconsistent. Financial support for services addressing this violence is inadequate. Women earn, on average, 20 per cent less than men.
  • Economic inequality is issue. Approximately 772 million women work in the informal economy without social protection. The digital gender gap further limits their economic opportunities. Artificial intelligence and online platforms often perpetuate harmful stereotypes, failing to protect women’s rights online.
image 275
  • Violence against women and girls is a global emergency. One in three women experiences physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. Technology-facilitated violence, such as online harassment, adds to this crisis. Although 90 per cent of countries have laws against gender-based violence, only 79 per cent have comprehensive national action plans to tackle the issue.
  • Women’s political participation has improved but remains insufficient. Currently, women occupy 27 per cent of parliamentary seats globally, an increase from 11 per cent in 1995. However, the majority of seats are still held by men. Temporary special measures, like gender quotas, have proven effective in promoting gender parity in political representation.
image 276
  • Beijing+30 Action Agenda was launched to address these challenges. It focuses on six areas – bridging the digital gender divide, freedom from poverty, zero tolerance for violence, equal decision-making power, women’s roles in peace and security, and climate justice.
  • Achieving gender equality requires political will and financial investment. An estimated $360 billion per year is necessary to meet global gender equality targets by 2030. Collaboration among governments, civil society, and the private sector is crucial to close accountability and financing gaps.

World Junior Chess Champion 2025

  • In chess, 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster Pranav Venkatesh dominated the FIDE World Junior Championship 2025 to claim the title in Montenegro last night. Pranav becomes the fourth Indian to win the World Junior title, following Viswanathan Anand, Pentala Harikrishna, and Abhijeet Gupta.

  •  Meanwhile, Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram won the prestigious Prague Masters in the Czech Republic last night. In the final round, Aravindh held a solid draw against Turkey’s Ediz Gurel to clinch sole first place. He remained unbeaten throughout the nine-round event, finishing ahead of a strong field that included world No. 8 R Praggnanandhaa, Dutch GM Anish Giri, and Chinese GM Wei Yi. With this victory, Grandmaster Arvind broke into the world’s top 15.
