Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan

  • Former ISRO Chairman and visionary scientist Dr. K. Kasturirangan passed away at the age of 84 on April 25, 2025, in Bengaluru. He was one of the most respected figures in India’s scientific and educational landscape.
  • According to a statement by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr. Kasturirangan breathed his last at 10:43 am at his residence in Bengaluru. Dr. Kasturirangan served as the fifth Chairman of ISRO from 1994 to 2003, concurrently holding the position of Secretary, Department of Space, for over nine years.

  • His association with ISRO spanned four decades, during which he was at the helm of several landmark missions and pivotal institutional developments. As Project Director, he led India’s first two experimental earth observation satellites, BHASKARA-I and BHASKARA-II.
  • Under his guidance, ISRO launched its first operational remote sensing satellite, IRS-1A, which became the cornerstone of India’s Earth observation program. Before his appointment as chairman, Dr. Kasturirangan served as the Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre, where he oversaw the development of next-generation satellites. He led key projects including:
  • INSAT-2 Series (Second-generation Indian National Satellites)
  • IRS-1A & IRS-1B (Earth observation satellites)
  • Scientific satellites for space research

PM Modi Launches Development Works In Madhubani

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated, laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 13,480 crore in Madhubani, Bihar on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day.
  • PM laid the foundation stone of an LPG bottling plant with a rail unloading facility at Hathua in Gopalganj District of Bihar worth around Rs 340 crore.
  • This will help in streamlining the supply chain and improving the efficiency of bulk LPG transportation.

  • Boosting power infrastructure in the region, Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 1,170 crore and also inaugurated multiple projects worth over Rs 5,030 crore in the power sector in Bihar under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme.
  • In line with his commitment to boost rail connectivity across the nation, Prime Minister flagged off Amrit Bharat express between Saharsa and Mumbai, Namo Bharat Rapid rail between Jaynagar and Patna and trains between Pipra and Saharsa and Saharsa and Samastipur.

Akashvani Wins Six Awards

  • Akashvani won a total of six awards in various categories at the India Audio Summit and Awards 2025. The third edition of the awards, which recognise excellence in radio and audio content production, was held in Mumbai last night.
  • Among the top accolades for Akashvani, former Union Minister Smriti Irani’s programme ‘Nai Soch Nai Kahani – A Radio Journey with Smriti Irani’ was named Series of the Year on radio.

  • The 13-episode series celebrated the incredible tales of grit and determination of women in particular. The series culminated with an exclusive interview with the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, which was recorded in the President’s House last year.
  • The News Services Division’s popular weekly phone-in show, Public Speak, was recognised as the Best Produced Audio Streaming Programme in the Health and Fitness category. Other award-winning programmes include ‘Chhayageet’, which won in the Best Late Night Show category; ‘Ujale Unki Yadon Ke’, named Best Celebrity Show on Air; and ‘Safarcast’, which clinched the award for Best Travel Show.
  • Akashvani also bagged the award for the Best Interstitial, showcasing its creative excellence in short-form audio content. Director General of Akashvani Dr Pragya Paliwal Gaur graced the event as the guest of honour.

  • Addressing the gathering, Dr Gaur highlighted the revolution in the audio industry and how Akashvani, as India’s Public Service Broadcaster, is committed to its mission to ‘Inform, Educate and Entertain’ the people of the country by upholding their interest. She underscored that Akashvani stands firmly for credibility and acts as a beacon in a noisy world

Amit Shah Urges CMs To Identify Pakistani Nationals

  • A day after India revoked visas issued to Pakistani nationals in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah today spoke to all Chief Ministers, asking them to identify all Pakistani nationals in their states.
  • Sources said Mr. Shah asked the Chief Ministers to take steps to ensure their prompt return to Pakistan. Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has held a meeting with Chief Secretaries of all the States and Union Territories through video conferencing over the issue and urged them to ensure strict compliance with the order related to the suspension of visa service to Pakistani nationals.

  • India has revoked all existing Visas issued to Pakistanis, except long-term visas, Diplomatic and Official visas, with effect from Sunday. All Medical Visas issued to Pakistani nationals will be valid only till the 29th of this month, and no new visas will be issued in the revoked categories.

Similipal Officially Accorded As National Park’s Status

  • Similipal, a unique and ecologically rich region in Odisha, has officially been accorded national park status by the Odisha government. After decades of anticipation, this significant move places Similipal as the 107th national park in India and the second in Odisha, after Bhitarkanika.

  • The formal notification was issued on April 24, 2025, marking an important milestone in the state’s conservation efforts and a major step towards the vision of a developed Odisha.
  • Similipal was initially notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1973, later being declared a critical tiger habitat in 2007.
  • This national park status is the result of concerted efforts by the Odisha government, forest authorities, and local communities, marking a historic chapter in wildlife conservation.

FTII Declared ‘Institution Deemed To Be University

  • Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, has been officially notified as an “Institution Deemed to be University” by the Union Ministry of Education. The move marks a milestone in the institute’s journey and opens new doors for academic autonomy, curriculum flexibility, and research innovation in cinema and television studies.
  • FTII was established in 1960 by the Government of India and was originally known as the Film Institute of India. Located in Pune, the institute was set up on the premises of the legendary Prabhat Studios, which had relocated from Kolhapur to Pune in 1933.

  • The institute has since carved out a formidable reputation for imparting practical, world-class training in filmmaking and television production. Over the decades, FTII alumni have gone on to make a mark on the national and global cinematic stage.
  • Renowned names such as Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Rajkummar Rao, and Jaideep Ahlawat all trace their creative roots back to this prestigious institution.
  • The status of a “Deemed to be University” is awarded by the central government based on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This recognition is reserved for institutes that demonstrate a high standard of education in a particular field, even though they may not technically be universities in the traditional sense.
