The 6th edition of the joint military exercise Dustlik 2025 between India and Uzbekistan concluded with a closing ceremony at the Foreign Training Node in Aundh, Pune. This annual bilateral exercise, alternating between the two nations, emphasizes the strengthening of defense collaboration aimed at enhancing regional stability and combating terrorism.
Initiated on April 16, the exercise focused on joint multi-domain sub-conventional operations within a semi-urban setting. This context is particularly relevant, given the ongoing challenges posed by terrorism in South Asia, as underscored by the 2023 Global Terrorism Index, which highlighted a significant deterioration in security within the region. The Indian contingent, consisting of 60 personnel from the Jat Regiment and the Indian Air Force, partnered with the Uzbekistan Army to undertake various counterterrorism missions. These operations included the establishment of a joint operations center at the battalion level, conducting raids, and executing search-and-destroy operations, all while utilizing air assets to neutralize threats.
A notable feature of Dustlik 2025 was the integration of advanced technologies and tactics. The deployment of drones and counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) measures, along with logistical support from the Air Force, were instrumental in sustaining forces in hostile environments. Additionally, helicopters were employed for reconnaissance missions, special heliborne operations, as well as small team insertions and extractions. This exercise allowed for the exchange of best practices, enabling both armies to refine their capabilities through rigorous training drills designed to project a resilient deterrent against potential terrorist threats.
The closing ceremony was marked by a symbolic exchange of mementos between the Indian and Uzbek contingents, held against a backdrop featuring the flags of both countries alongside the Dustlik emblem. A group photograph captured the camaraderie and collaborative spirit shared among the soldiers, reflecting the strengthened ties between the two armed forces. Senior military officials attended the event, including Uzbekistan contingent commander Col Jsbarov Thoir Ergashovich, who previously described the exercise as crucial for enhancing cooperation in counterterrorism operations.
Dustlik has been held annually since its inception, alternating locations between India and Uzbekistan, with the preceding edition taking place in Termez, Uzbekistan, in April 2024. The current exercises at Aundh, a prominent military training hub in Pune, align with India’s broader defense indigenization efforts under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, complementing Uzbekistan’s evolving defense requirements. Beyond tactical training, this exercise opens the door for increased cooperation in areas such as joint defense production and military medicine, further entrenching India-Uzbekistan relations.
The successful conclusion of Dustlik 2025 reaffirms both nations’ steadfast commitment and operational readiness to confront shared security challenges, fostering a united front against threats to regional stability.
