YUGM Innovation Conclave

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the YUGM Conclave at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. YUGM, meaning confluence in Sanskrit, is a first-of-its-kind strategic conclave convening leaders from government, academia, industry, and innovators.
  • It will contribute to the country’s innovation journey, driven by a collaborative project of around one thousand 400 crore rupees with joint investment from the Wadhwani Foundation and Government Institutions.

Padma Awards

  • President Droupadi Murmu today conferred upon Padma Awards to 71 eminent personalities for the year 2025 at the first Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
  • Of them four were conferred with Padma Vibhushan, 10 with Padma Bhushan and 57 personalities were confered with Padma Shri. D Nageshwar Reddy, Dr Lakshminarayana Subramaniam were conferred with Padma Vibhushan for their contribution in medicine and art field, respectively, while M. T. Vasudevan Nair and Osamu Suzuki and honoured with Padma Vibhushan posthumously.

  • Among those honoured with Padma Bhushan are Nandamuri Balakrishna, Shekhar Kapur, former Indian Hockey team captain Sreejesh P R, while former deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi was conferred posthumously. Those honoured with Padma Shri include Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, Former SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, Stephen Knapp, Ronu Majumdar, and classic vocalist Dr. K Omankutty Amma.

  • Recipient of Padam Shri Award and Former SBI chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya said that she achieved this honour for her role in expanding the Jandhan scheme. Another awardee Ronu Majumdar who also recieved Padma Shri in the field of art, expressed his gratitude to the Government of India saying that his work and dedication has been recognised.

  • Carnatic Vocalist Dr. K Omankutty Amma got the Padma Shri award for her contribution in the field of art. She recalled her days, working with All India Radio and expressed the public broadcaster’s contribution in shaping her career. American Author, Stephen Knapp, were also among the 71 people who received Padma awards this year. Talking to Akashvani News, He thanked government for recognising his work.

Sayani Das

  • Sayani Das became the first Indian woman to cross the North Channel, completing the 38 km swim in 13 hours and 22 minutes from Northern Ireland to Scotland. This swim marks the fifth open water channel swim conquered by Sayani, who aims to complete the Oceans Seven challenge, which includes seven of the toughest swims worldwide.
  • To prepare for the frigid 13°C waters of the North Channel, Sayani endured ice baths as part of her training, dunking herself in a drum filled with 20-30 kg of ice for up to an hour daily.

11th BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers’ Meeting

  • Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, led the Indian delegation at the BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers’ Meeting held under Brazil’s Presidency in Brasília.

  • The meeting, convened under the slogan “Strengthening the Cooperation of the Global South for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, culminated in the adoption of a forward-looking declaration addressing two pivotal themes: “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Future of Work” and “The Impacts of Climate Change on the World of Work and a Just Transition”. India’s achievement of reduction in GHG emissions (2020–2019) and its net-zero by 2070 pledge reinforced its climate leadership.

India Bans 16 Pakistani Youtube Channels

  • India has banned 16 Pakistani YouTube channels, including Dawn News, Samaa TV, Ary News and Geo News, for disseminating misinformation against India in the backdrop of the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
  • The YouTube channels have been banned for spreading provocative and communally sensitive content, false and misleading narratives against India, its Army and security agencies.  The banned channels have subscribers of over 63 million.

  • The government has also objected to the reporting of the BBC on the Peshawar terror attack and conveyed the country’s strong sentiments to India’s BBC head. A formal letter has also been sent to the BBC on the terming of terrorists as militants. The External Affairs Ministry will be monitoring the reporting of the BBC.

  • International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) released a report on April 21, 2025, revealing the lowest snow persistence in 23 years in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, threatening river flows across South Asia.
  • ICIMOD 2025 report analyzes the snow cover patterns in the HKH region and highlights the alarming decline in snow persistence during the 2024–2025 winter season. This poses risks to water security, agriculture, hydropower, and drinking water supplies for nearly 2 billion people.
  • Key Finding: Snow persistence was 23.6% below the 20-year average, the lowest in 23 years.
  • Definition: Snow persistence refers to how long snow stays on the ground, a major indicator for water availability.
  • Major Rivers Impacted: Ganga (-24.1%), Brahmaputra (-27.9%), Indus (-16.0%).
  • Worst Affected Basins: Mekong (-51.9%), Salween (-48.3%).
  • Snowmelt Importance: Contributes 23% of annual river flows.
