‘OPERATION SINDOOR’
- Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, a series of precision strikes on terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, triggering widespread outrage and demands for decisive action.
- Nine Terror Sites Targeted: Precision and Restraint Emphasized
- According to a formal release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the strikes targeted a total of nine locations believed to house active terrorist infrastructure involved in planning and executing attacks against India. These include:
- A former Lashkar-e-Taiba base near Muzaffarabad in PoK
- A Jaish-e-Mohammad-linked seminary in Bahawalpur, Punjab Province
- A key infiltration hub in Kotli, PoK
- The operation was launched following days of high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and the top brass of the Indian Armed Forces, including:
- Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi
- Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal A P Singh
- Defence Secretary R K Singh
- Several airports in northern part of the country are closed for commercial operations after Indian Armed Forces launched airstrikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
- In a social media post, SpiceJet claimed that airports in Dharamshala, Leh, Jammu, Srinagar, and Amritsar are closed until further notice. Indigo has also advised its passengers to check the flight status from these airports.
India’s Progress In Human Development Index
- India improved its rank to 130 out of 193 countries on the Human Development Index (HDI) in 2023, according to the UNDP Human Development Report 2025. This marks a three-place rise from its 2022 rank of 133. India also demonstrated notable improvement in reducing gender inequality, climbing from 108 (out of 166 countries) in 2022 to 102 out of 193 countries in 2023 on the Gender Inequality Index (GII).
- The theme of the Human Development Report “A matter of choice: People and possibilities in the age of AI”.
- Despite this progress, India scored 0.874 on the Gender Development Index (GDI), placing it among Group 5 countries which are considered to have low success in closing the gender gap. On the HDI front, with a value of 0.685, India remains in the medium human development category, but is inching closer to the threshold of high human development, set at 0.700. India’s HDI value has increased by over 53% since 1990, outpacing global and South Asian averages. The improvement is attributed to economic growth and targeted social protection and welfare programs.
- India’s life expectancy at birth rose from 71.7 years in 2022 to 72 years in 2023, the highest since the index’s inception. In 1990, it stood at 58.6 years, signaling a robust recovery from the pandemic. Key national health schemes like the National Rural Health Mission, Ayushman Bharat, Janani Suraksha Yojana, and Poshan Abhiyaan have played crucial roles in improving health outcomes.
- In terms of education, expected years of schooling have remained stable at about 13 years, while mean years of schooling rose marginally from 6.6 to 6.9 years. Initiatives such as the Right to Education Act, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, and the National Education Policy 2020 have been central to these gains.
- On the economic front, Gross National Income (GNI) per capita increased to $9,047 in 2023 from $8,475 in 2022 (at 2021 PPP $). Since 1990, GNI per capita has more than quadrupled from $2,167.22.
- Programs like MGNREGA, Jan Dhan Yojana, and digital inclusion initiatives have contributed significantly to poverty reduction, helping 135 million people escape multidimensional poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21.
Telangana Hosts Miss World 2025
- The 72nd edition of the Miss World pageant unfolds in Telangana from May 10 to 31, 2025, contestants from around the globe are arriving in Hyderabad to partake in this internationally acclaimed event. The Government of Telangana is leveraging the opportunity to highlight the state’s tourism potential and cultural heritage on a global scale.

Bharat Telecom 2025
- Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, inaugurated the 22nd edition of Bharat Telecom in New Delhi on 6 May 2025. Bharat Telecom is an annual event that aims to present India as a provider of world-class telecom solutions.
- The Bharat Telecom Expo is organised by the Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

China Clinches 14th Sudirman Cup Title
- The 2025 Sudirman Cup final was a repeat of the 2023 final, in which China defeated South Korea. This year, the result was the same: China defeated South Korea 3-1.
- The Chinese team defeated Japan, while South Korea defeated Indonesia to reach the final. This was the Chinese team’s 16th consecutive final. Badminton powerhouse China won the BWF Sudirman Cup for the fourth consecutive time, beating South Korea 3-1 in the final of the 19th edition of the Sudirman Cup 2025.
- It was the 14th title win for the Chinese in the Sudirman Cup’s history. Only three countries, China, Indonesia, and South Korea, have won the Sudirman Cup.
- The Indian team failed to qualify for the quarter-finals and finished 9th amongst the 16 teams participating in the tournament.
- The Sudirman Cup is a biennial mixed-team badminton competition organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). China hosted the 19th edition of the Sudirman Cup Finals in Xiamen from 27 April to 4 May 2025. udirman Cup was instituted by the BWF in 1989 in memory of the founder and President of Badminton Association of Indonesia, late Dick Sudirman.
