INS Kiltan Arrives in Singapore for IMDEX-25, Strengthening India-Singapore Naval Ties

In a noteworthy demonstration of maritime diplomacy, the Indian Navy’s INS Kiltan has docked at Singapore’s Changi Naval Base to take part in the International Maritime Defence Expo (IMDEX-25) from May 6 to May 8, 2025. This port call underscores the strengthening naval cooperation between India and Singapore, while also highlighting India’s expanding influence in the strategically crucial Indo-Pacific region.

INS Kiltan, an advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvette of the Kamorta class, exemplifies India’s advancements in indigenous defense production, boasting that nearly 90% of its systems are locally developed. With a length of 109 meters, the vessel is equipped to engage in modern warfare scenarios, which include countermeasures against nuclear, biological, and chemical threats.

Upon its arrival, INS Kiltan received a warm reception from the Republic of Singapore Navy. The ship’s Commanding Officer made a meaningful gesture by paying homage at the Kranji War Memorial, where a wreath was laid in honor of the Allied soldiers, including Indian servicemen, who lost their lives during World War II.

This visit reflects the ongoing trajectory of deepening defense ties between India and Singapore, characterized by a range of activities including joint naval exercises, strategic dialogues, and operational deployments. A notable example was the deployment in 2024 of vessels such as INS Delhi, INS Shakti, and INS Kiltan to the South China Sea. Singapore remains a crucial maritime partner for India, consistent with India’s 2015 Maritime Strategy, which emphasizes collaborative efforts to ensure regional security and stability.

In addition to defense, India and Singapore have furthered their bilateral cooperation through various agreements, including the Direct Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) and recent Memorandums of Understanding in areas such as digital innovation, semiconductors, and healthcare. The participation of INS Kiltan in IMDEX-25 not only showcases India’s naval capabilities but also reaffirms its commitment to fostering enduring partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
