World Red Cross Day
- World Red Cross Day is being celebrated today to commemorate the 197th Birth Anniversary of its founder, Jean Henry Dunant.
- The theme for this year is “Keeping Humanity Alive “ – a call to celebrate those who give their time, and sometimes their lives, to ease the suffering of others and protect their inherent human dignity.
- In Nagaland, a series of programmes are being organised by the Red Cross volunteers across the districts. Organised by the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland State Branch, a state-level programme will be held at Kohima with the Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, as the honoured guest.
- In his message, Dr. Rio acknowledged the tireless efforts of Red Cross volunteers. He said they honour the countless Red Cross volunteers who serve with compassion, courage, and unwavering impartiality, even in the most challenging conditions.
World Athletics Day
- World Athletics Day 2025, celebrated globally on May 7, continues its tradition of promoting athletic participation, especially among youth, and advocating for health-conscious lifestyles.

Global Space Exploration Summit (GLEX) 2025
- GLEX 2025’s theme is “Reaching New Worlds: A Space Exploration Renaissance,” emphasising innovation, inclusivity, and international cooperation in space science.
- GLEX 2025 is jointly organised by:
- International Astronautical Federation (IAF) – the world’s leading space advocacy body.
- Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) – as the primary host.
- Astronautical Society of India (ASI) – as the co-host.
- The conference represents a milestone in India’s expanding global space leadership, highlighting its transition from a regional space power to a key international player. Founded in 1951, the IAF has over 500 members from 78 countries, including major space agencies, private firms, research institutes, and universities.
- Its motto “Connecting @ll Space People” and vision “A space-faring world cooperating for the benefit of humanity” guide its efforts to promote global space cooperation.
- The GLEX series, organised by IAF, serves as a platform to share programmatic, technical, and policy insights and facilitate collaborative space missions across nations.
India & UK
- India and the United Kingdom concluded a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) described by both governments as a “historic milestone.” This comprehensive and mutually beneficial trade pact aims to enhance economic cooperation, eliminate trade barriers, and boost investment and job creation.
- Coming after over two years of negotiations, the agreement covers goods, services, investment facilitation, and mobility of professionals, and is set to significantly transform the economic landscape between the two countries. The deal also includes a Double Contribution Convention to resolve long-standing concerns related to social security contributions for Indian workers in the UK.
- India and the United Kingdom concluded a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) on 6th of May after long talks between both countries.
- Key Features and Highlights of the India–UK FTA
- Zero Duty Access for Indian Exports : 99% of Indian exports to the UK will enjoy zero customs duty, offering a major boost to labour-intensive and manufacturing sectors. This is expected to double bilateral trade, currently valued at $60 billion, by 2030.
- Indian Tariff Reductions for UK Goods : India has agreed to reduce or eliminate tariffs on 90% of UK tariff lines, with becoming duty-free within a decade**.
- Tariff reductions will be phased, ensuring a balance between liberalization and protection of domestic interests.
- Key Indian Sectors Benefiting : Textiles, footwear, marine products, leather, sports goods, toys, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, auto parts, organic chemicals – all will gain from enhanced market access.
- The textile industry is expected to see significant growth, as UK tariffs of up to 10% will be removed.
- Benefits for UK Exporters : Major tariff cuts in India for products such as,
- Whisky and gin: reduced from 150% to 75%, then to 40% over 10 years.
- Automotive parts: reduced from 100%+ to 10% under a quota.
- Cosmetics, aerospace, lamb, medical devices, electrical machinery, salmon, soft drinks, chocolate, and biscuits.
- Mobility and Labour Provisions – The Double Contribution Convention
- Indian professionals working in the UK and their employers will be exempt from social security contributions for 3 years, a longstanding demand of India.
- This will reduce costs for Indian IT and service companies and make Indian talent more competitive in the UK market.
- Strategic and Economic Significance
- Boost to Labour-Intensive Sectors : The FTA is expected to create employment, especially in MSMEs involved in textiles, apparel, footwear, and auto components. Start-ups and innovators are also expected to benefit from easier access to UK markets and capital.
- Services Sector Integration : Though not detailed extensively, the FTA sets the groundwork for deeper services trade integration, including IT, legal, and financial services, where India has a comparative advantage.

Govt Extends Tenure Of CBI Director For One Year
- Government has extended the tenure of CBI Director Praveen Sood for one year beyond 24th of this month. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Praveen Sood for a period of one year. Mr Sood is an IPS officer of Karnataka Cadre and was to retire on 25th of this month.
‘Depot Darpan’ Portal
- Ministry of Consumer Affairs will launch the “Depot Darpan” portal and mobile app enable real-time monitoring of food storage depots, aiming to improve quality, safety, and transparency in warehousing. Depot Darpan will use geo-tagged data, automated ratings, and supervisory validation to assess infrastructure and operational efficiency, with each depot receiving a star rating based on performance.
- The platform integrates smart technologies such as CCTV, IoT sensors (for CO₂, humidity, fire hazards, etc.), and AI tools like ANPR, FRS, and automated bag counting to enhance security and operational control. Around 2,278 warehouses—managed by FCI, CWC, and other agencies—will be covered under the initiative, empowering officials with mobile-based monitoring and automated performance insights.
