Kazakhstan Unveils Next-Generation Taimas 8×8 Infantry Fighting Vehicle

Kazakhstan’s military recently showcased its Taimas 8×8 next-generation wheeled infantry fighting vehicle during a military parade in Astana. This significant unveiling represents a result of trilateral collaboration involving Kazakhstan, Turkey, and China, emphasizing the strategic partnerships in defense capabilities among these nations. Attendees included key representatives from Turkey’s Otokar, a notable tactical vehicle manufacturer, and Norinco, a state-owned enterprise from China.

The development of the Taimas system is part of a broader initiative led by local industrial partner Astana MPR, aimed at upgrading Kazakhstan’s military ground combat capabilities. The design of the Taimas is based on the chassis of Otokar’s flagship Arma vehicle, widely deployed in various military forces, including the Turkish Armed Forces and non-NATO allies such as the Estonian Defence Forces.

A standout feature of the Taimas is its dual-caliber mounted weapon system that includes both a 100-millimeter and a 30-millimeter configuration. There has been speculation surrounding the turret’s origin, with some sources indicating it may be based on Norinco’s VN11 model or the Nefer turret by Turkish defense manufacturer Aselsan.

The Taimas vehicle impressively weighs 30 tons (27,215 kilograms) and possesses an amphibious capability, enabling it to traverse both land and water. It can reach a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour). Comprehensive testing has validated its performance, with the vehicle having successfully completed over 50,000 kilometers (31,069 miles) across diverse and extreme environments in Kazakhstan. The nation’s defense agency has already codified it for military operations.

According to Vadim Shakshakbayev, the Director of Astana MPR, the Taimas is positioned as one of the most powerful infantry fighting vehicles in its class globally. It boasts remarkable resilience, capable of surviving a mine blast equivalent to 10 kilograms (22 pounds) beneath the hull while maintaining operational functionality under radiation threat conditions. Despite accommodating a heavy turret, the vehicle retains its full amphibious capabilities, underscoring its versatility in modern combat scenarios.
