During a vibrant roadshow in Vadodara, Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a touching display of admiration from the family of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a notable figure in the Indian Army. As the Prime Minister traveled through the streets, Colonel Qureshi’s family welcomed him with showers of flower petals, a poignant gesture recognizing Modi’s contributions toward women’s empowerment and his unwavering support for the armed forces.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who has recently garnered national recognition, is one of the two women officers who played a crucial role in briefing the media about Operation Sindoor. This operation, aimed at addressing terrorist threats across India’s borders, has been celebrated as a significant achievement in India’s defense efforts. Furthermore, Colonel Qureshi holds the distinction of being the first woman to command an Indian Army contingent at the multinational military exercise “Exercise Force 18,” the largest of its kind hosted by India.
The roadshow formed part of PM Modi’s two-day visit to Gujarat, during which he is expected to inaugurate and lay the foundation for various projects amounting to over ₹82,950 crore across several locations, including Dahod, Bhuj, and Gandhinagar. Crowds gathered along the route, enthusiastically cheering the Prime Minister as he highlighted India’s recent defense successes, particularly the momentous Operation Sindoor.
In an emotional exchange, Colonel Qureshi’s twin sister, Shyna Sunsara, expressed her pride, saying, “We felt good meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has done a lot for women’s empowerment. When your sister does something for the country, it inspires everyone. She is no longer just my sister but the country’s sister.”
Their mother, Halima Bibi, radiated pride upon meeting the Prime Minister, stating, “I felt happy to meet PM Modi ji. Women and sisters are happy with Operation Sindoor.” Colonel Qureshi’s father, Taj Mohammed Qureshi, reflected on the significance of the moment, describing the Prime Minister’s greeting as respectful and memorable.
Sanjay Qureshi, Colonel Sofiya’s brother, also shared his heartfelt sentiments, emphasizing the emotional weight of the occasion. “It was a great moment when PM Modi came here. We got to see him for the first time. Through gestures, he greeted us. I thank our defense forces and the government of India, which gave this chance to my sister. A woman taking revenge for the women who suffered so much – what can be better than this?”
Following the event, PM Modi shared highlights of his interactions during the roadshow on his official X handle. The gathering and accompanying sentiments highlighted a strengthened bond between the public, the armed forces, and the nation’s leadership, fostering a sense of national pride in light of recent military accomplishments.
