DRDO Inaugurates Quantum Technology Research Centre in Delhi

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated the Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) at Metcalfe House, Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s strategic technology development. The event was led by Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, with the attendance of key officials, including Smt. Suma Varughese, Director General of Micro Electronic Devices, Computational Systems, and Cyber Systems.

QTRC is set to become a foundational hub for India’s homegrown quantum technology endeavors. Equipped with specialized infrastructure, the center will facilitate advanced research in several critical areas, including laser characterization, single-photon source testing, quantum key distribution (QKD), and atomic clock development. These areas are crucial for creating ultra-secure communication systems, advanced sensors, and robust cryptographic frameworks, especially as the digital threat landscape evolves.

Central to the QTRC’s mission is its focus on quantum key distribution, a technique spearheaded by the Scientific Analysis Group (SAG) of the DRDO. QKD leverages quantum mechanics principles to create secure communication channels that are resistant to interception, making it an essential tool for the upcoming post-quantum era where traditional encryption methods may no longer suffice due to advancements in quantum computing. Additionally, the center will engage in developing precision atomic clocks and micro-fabricated alkali vapor cells, which are crucial for improved radar and navigation technologies.

During the inauguration, Dr. Kamat emphasized the strategic relevance of the QTRC, asserting, “The QTRC is a major leap forward in our journey toward self-reliance in defense technologies. It demonstrates DRDO’s resolve to develop sovereign quantum capabilities in line with the National Quantum Mission.” Smt. Varughese echoed these sentiments, highlighting the center’s pivotal role in equipping India to address emerging national security challenges posed by quantum-enabled threats.

The establishment of the QTRC follows DRDO’s successful demonstration of quantum communication over a distance of 100 kilometers, conducted in partnership with IIT Delhi. This breakthrough showcases India’s growing technical capabilities and underscores its ambition to take a leadership role in quantum technology for defense.

The launch of this state-of-the-art facility represents a strategic initiative aimed at reducing reliance on foreign quantum technologies while positioning India at the forefront of the global quantum race. As the significance of quantum innovation continues to escalate, the QTRC is expected to be instrumental in shaping the future of national defense and securing communications.
