In a transformative move aimed at bolstering the engagement of Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (ORs) within the Indian Army, Subedar Major Ojit Singh of the 3 Assam Regiment has been appointed as the inaugural Command Subedar Major (Comd SM) of the Northern Command. This groundbreaking appointment signifies a pivotal shift in institutional leadership and troop involvement.
The establishment of the Command Subedar Major position is a direct initiative stemming from a directive issued by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This directive mandates the creation of Command Subedar Major posts across all Army Commands, as well as at the COAS level. Drawing inspiration from the role of Senior Sergeant Major employed in Western militaries, this initiative aims to formalize a communication channel between the senior leadership of the Army and the foundational JCOs and ORs, who are vital to its operational effectiveness.
In his new role, Ojit Singh will provide advisory support to the Army Commander on issues pertinent to JCOs and ORs. This advisory function is comparable to that of the Colonel Military Secretary (Col MS), who oversees officer-level affairs. Singh’s insights are expected to play a crucial role in developing policies, enhancing morale, setting training standards, and addressing personnel welfare, all of which stem from the foundational level of the Army.
Beyond his advisory responsibilities, the Command SM will actively participate in operational reviews. Singh will accompany the Army Commander on visits to various units and formations, conducting dedicated sessions with JCOs and ORs to gain insights into ground realities. This engagement will facilitate the flow of feedback to the command leadership, ensuring that concerns and recommendations from the operational front are effectively communicated.
This appointment is anticipated to forge a deeper bond of trust and coordination between Army Headquarters and field units, particularly in strategically significant regions under Northern Command’s purview. It underscores a growing acknowledgment of the critical roles that JCOs and ORs play in shaping the Army’s future trajectory.
Subedar Major Ojit Singh, recognized for his professionalism and extensive field experience, adds significant credibility to his new position. His appointment as the first Command SM is viewed as a historic advancement that could set a standard for future military leadership paradigms within the Indian Army.
