India, Kyrgyzstan
- India and Kyrgyzstan signed the Protocol and exchanged the Instrument of Ratification of the Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT). The BIT was signed in presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Foreign Affairs Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Zheenbek Kulubaev Moldokanovich in New Delhi. The new Treaty replaces the earlier agreement enforced on 12th May 2000, ensuring continuity in the protection of investments between the two nations.
- Highlighting its benefits, the Finance Ministry said that the India-Kyrgyz BIT marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral economic relations and fostering a secure and predictable investment environment. It aims to promote and protect interests of investors of either country in the territory of the other country with various key features.
- The Ministry added that the treaty is expected to further encourage cross-border investments and deepen economic cooperation between India and Kyrgyzstan.
G7 Leaders’ Summit 2025
- The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Group of 7 (G7) meetings. Canada is hosting the G7 Leaders’ Summit from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. This will be Canada’s seventh time as host. Notably, India has yet to receive an invitation, which could mark its first absence since 2019. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended every summit since then, except for the cancelled 2020 meeting.
- The G7 is an informal group comprising seven major economies – the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. These nations collectively represent about 40% of the global GDP and 10% of the world’s population. The G7 has no legal status or permanent secretariat, and decisions require independent ratification from member states.
- The G7 originated from a meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Paris in 1973. This meeting aimed to address economic challenges such as the oil crisis and rising inflation. The first official G7 summit took place in 1975 in Rambouillet, France. Initially, it included six nations, with Canada joining the following year.
- In 1977, representatives from the European Economic Community began participating in G7 meetings. After the Cold War, Russia was invited in 1998, transforming the G7 into the G8. However, Russia was expelled in 2014 due to its actions in Crimea, reverting the group back to the G7.
- Each G7 member country holds the presidency in rotation. The presiding country is responsible for organising the summit and setting the agenda. Recently, Canada holds the presidency and is tasked with facilitating discussions among member nations.
- Initially focused on international economic policy, the G7 has broadened its scope to include foreign policy and security issues. The annual summit serves as a platform for discussing shared values and concerns among member countries. The outcomes often influence global governance and decision-making.
- Typically, the host country invites additional nations as guest countries or outreach partners. For the 2025 summit, Canada has invited Ukraine and Australia. The list of other guest countries has not yet been disclosed.
Samruddhi Mahamarg
- Samruddhi Mahamarg, also known as Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, is a monumental road infrastructure initiative in Maharashtra. This 701-km expressway connects Mumbai to Nagpur, dramatically reducing travel time to just seven hours. The project was officially inaugurated on June 5, 2025, with the final 76-km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane now operational.
- The Samruddhi Mahamarg was conceived in 2016 during Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s tenure. It is a greenfield expressway designed to enhance connectivity between Maharashtra’s commercial and winter capitals.
- The project cost approximately Rs 55,335 crore and required the acquisition of over 8,800 hectares of land from nearly 24,000 farmers across 10 districts.
- The expressway is primarily a six-lane, access-controlled corridor, expandable to eight lanes. Its design focuses on high-speed travel and safety. The first phase was inaugurated in December 2022, and the project aims to provide a world-class driving experience.
- The expressway reduces travel time. The newly inaugurated stretch cuts the journey between Amane and Igatpuri from over 90 minutes to just 40 minutes. This new alignment avoids the steep climbs of the old Mumbai-Nashik Highway, enhancing fuel efficiency and travel comfort.
- While the expressway is often referred to as the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, it begins at Amane, about 63 km from Mumbai’s administrative centre, Mantralaya. The nearest access point for Mumbaikars is near Bhiwandi, which is a logistics hub. The Maharashtra government has proposed upgrades to the Mumbai-Nashik Highway to improve access to the expressway.
Fisheries Subsidies Agreement
- Nicaragua became the 101st member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to formally accept the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies, marking a significant step toward global efforts to combat harmful fishing practices and restore marine biodiversity.
- The instrument of acceptance was handed over to WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala by Nicaragua’s Ambassador Rosalía Bohorquez Palacios, bringing the WTO just 10 acceptances away from the threshold required for the agreement’s entry into force.
- The formal acceptance by Nicaragua is highly significant as it pushes the total number of acceptances of the WTO’s Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies to 101 out of the required 111, signaling imminent enforcement of the landmark deal. This development brings the global community closer to banning subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, overfishing, and harmful practices on the high seas. Adopted at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) in Geneva in June 2022.
- First WTO agreement with a strong focus on sustainability and marine resource conservation.
- It was the result of decades of negotiation to address one of the root causes of declining global fish stocks—harmful subsidies.
Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana
- Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana from Hamirpur on June 2, 2025. The scheme aims to increase the state’s green cover by planting fruit-bearing trees on degraded forest lands while promoting employment generation and community involvement through Mahila Mandals, Yuvak Mandals, and self-help groups (SHGs).
- The launch of the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana and the Green Adoption Scheme marks a strategic move by the Himachal Pradesh government to combine climate action with grassroots participation. With Himachal facing a shortage of field forest staff and growing ecological challenges, these initiatives aim to restore forest health, involve citizens, and generate local employment, especially for women and youth.
Andhra Pradesh Signs 5- Year MoU With ISRO
- Andhra Pradesh government has signed a 5-year MoU with ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) to enhance its Real-Time Governance System (RTGS) by integrating satellite imagery and scientific data for citizen-centric services.
- Under this partnership, satellite inputs will be used across 42 applications within the AWARE platform, covering sectors like agriculture, weather forecasting, disaster management, and urban planning.
- The AWARE system will combine data from satellites, drones, IoT devices, mobile feeds, and CCTV to deliver real-time alerts and advisories to both citizens and the government through platforms like SMS, WhatsApp, and social media.
