In a significant move to address recent challenges in India’s aviation sector, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) convened a high-level meeting with senior officials from Air India and Air India Express. The primary focus was to assess the safety practices, operational readiness, and passenger service standards of the two airlines. This initiative follows a series of incidents that underline the urgent need for improved coordination and infrastructure across the sector.
With both airlines operating over 1,000 flights daily, there has been heightened scrutiny due to various issues, including maintenance problems, frequent flight cancellations, and delays related to airspace management. The DGCA outlined seven key areas of focus during the meeting: regulatory compliance, fleet reliability, defect reporting, spare part availability, and timely communication to passengers.
A significant topic of discussion was the ongoing airspace restrictions over Iran, which have adversely affected flight routes between India and critical destinations in Europe and North America. Airlines were encouraged to explore alternative routes through Central Asia or the Mediterranean and to maintain proactive communication with passengers and crew members regarding these changes.
The DGCA also reviewed the status of Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet. Out of a total of 33 aircraft, 24 have successfully passed recent safety inspections, with two more expected to complete checks by the end of the day, and another scheduled for inspection the following day. However, four aircraft are currently undergoing major maintenance, while two remain grounded in Delhi, pending clearance. These inspections have become more rigorous following a fatal crash in Ahmedabad earlier this month, underscoring the need for heightened safety protocols.
Moreover, DGCA officials emphasized the necessity for improved coordination among the engineering, ground handling, and operations departments within the airlines to mitigate disruptions and delays. The regulator also highlighted the importance of establishing a strong real-time defect reporting mechanism, which is vital for making informed operational decisions and ensuring compliance with Civil Aviation Requirements.
This meeting reflects the DGCA’s commitment to strengthening aviation safety standards, enhancing public confidence, and providing reliable service amidst the evolving demands of both domestic and international air travel.
