Major General MPS Gill, VSM, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Uttarakhand sub-area, recently reviewed the operational readiness and infrastructural advancements at the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre (GRRC) in Lansdowne. His visit underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to modernization and readiness in the face of regional challenges.
During the inspection, Major General Gill emphasized the importance of maintaining professional excellence among personnel at all levels. He urged the troops to uphold high standards of military preparedness, particularly as they navigate evolving technological and regional dynamics.
A significant part of the review was focused on the training programs for Agniveers, young recruits inducted under the Agnipath Scheme, which was introduced in 2022. Insights from a study conducted by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies revealed a 30 percent increase in technical training efficiency since the scheme’s inception, highlighting its beneficial effects on military training processes.
In addition to assessing training programs, Major General Gill evaluated ongoing infrastructure enhancements at the center. This evaluation aligns with data from the Ministry of Defence, which notes a 25 percent increase in technology-related military investments since 2022. His visit included engaging interactions with the troops, a thorough analysis of operational resources, and an examination of the newly developed training modules, demonstrating his proactive leadership style and extensive experience in commanding armoured units.
Major General Gill took command on May 27, 2025, succeeding Major General R Prem Raj. His leadership is expected to steer greater strategic attention towards the Uttarakhand sub-area, especially as part of ongoing military reforms that include the recent establishment of a drone training facility at the Madras Regimental Centre. These initiatives reflect a robust drive towards a technologically advanced and youth-oriented Indian Army.
